Jared Goff played for the California Golden Bears during his collegiate career.

The starting quarterback of the Detroit Lions franchise in the NFL is the eight-year veteran, Jared Goff. He was born on October 14, 1994, in the city of Novato, California which lies about 30 miles north of San Francisco. The tall 6 feet 4 inch quarterback was born to parents Jerry and Nancy Goff and he attended Marin Catholic High School near his hometown in San Francisco. Goff started his NFL career with the Los Angeles Rams as he was selected with the first pick in the 2016 NFL Draft. He remained with the Rams for five seasons until the end of 2020. In 2021, Goff was traded to the Lions along with a third-round pick in the 2021 draft, and first-round picks in the 2022 and 2023 drafts for Lions quarterback, Matthew Stafford. As of November 2024, Goff is in his fourth season with the Detroit Lions after guiding the team last year to their first-ever NFC Championship appearance since 1991.

His rookie season with the Rams did not get off to a good start. The franchise was not doing well and Goff was the backup quarterback for the first nine games of the season. Getting his chance to lead the team, Goff was handed the reins of the offense for the last seven games in which the Rams went 0-7. In 2017, the Rams found a new head coach in Sean McVay and the team saw a complete turnaround in fortunes. Going 11-4, the Rams lost in the Wild Card Round to the Atlanta Falcons. 2018 was another great year for the Rams as they went 13-3 and made it to Super Bowl LIII only to lose to Tom Brady and the New England Patriots. However, in 2019 and 2020 the team again started to struggle despite Goff producing on a similar level as before prompting the management to look for a change in the upcoming season.

Goff eventually decided to go to the University of California, Berkeley where he would play on the Golden Bears football team. Goff spent three years playing for the Golden Bears and he lit up the PAC-12 NCAA football conference with his stellar play. In his three years at California University, Goff threw for 12,195 passing yards and added 96 touchdowns while throwing only 30 interceptions. He finished his college career with a passer rating of 144.

Becoming the first true freshman to start at quarterback in Cal history, Goff went about his business and set a mind-boggling 26 school records by the time he left. In his freshman season, Goff started all 12 games and even though his stats were extraordinary, the team finished with a dismal 1-11 record. The following year, his sophomore season, Goff continued to get better, throwing seven touchdowns in a game against the Colorado Buffaloes and throwing for a school-record 527 yards and five touchdowns against Washington State. The team still finished with a losing record but improved to 5-7.

In Goff’s final year, he led the Golden Bears to a winning season finishing 7-5 on the year. In a game against Arizona State, he eclipsed his previous year’s passing record in a game as he produced 542 passing yards. By the end of the season, Goff decided to forgo his senior year and enter the 2016 NFL Draft where he was projected to be selected as the number one overall pick.
