5 Big things that could happen after Drew McIntyre won the WWE Championship at WrestleMania 36

At long last!
At long last!

Drew McIntyre never competed for a World Championship before WrestleMania 36. But, 2020 got off on the right foot for him as he won the Royal Rumble match and secured his spot in the main event of WrestleMania 36.

While that would have been the main event regardless of the arena, we feel for Drew McIntyre as the moment he envisioned for so long happened in front of a crowd of zero.

Either way, the prevailing circumstances forced WWE into the situation they're in now. Moreover, there's no denying that they made the best of their limited resources, especially when looking at the two cinematic-style matches that happened.

McIntyre has always been on Paul Heyman's "list" of Superstars to push on RAW and the trigger was pulled at the right time. With McIntyre officially reaching main event Superstar status, here are five big things that will happen with Drew McIntyre as WWE Champion.

#5. A rematch with Brock Lesnar

An inevitability
An inevitability

Had the match happened at the Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida, the chance of this match being just four-and-a-half minutes would have been slim. The two didn't have a match as they should have, as was the case with the Seth Rollins-Brock Lesnar match at WrestleMania 35.

Rollins and Lesnar had a good match at SummerSlam later that year, with Rollins beating The Beast Incarnate clean to win his second Universal Championship. There weren't many moves executed in the match either, with Lesnar using the suplex and F-5 while McIntyre just needed to use the Claymore Kick multiple times.

WWE may want to run this back in front of an audience to give McIntyre a proper coronation to remember. SummerSlam would be the perfect stage for that, as McIntyre will have plenty of Superstars to feud with until then.

#4. Fresh feuds

Since Brock Lesnar rarely appears after WrestleMania and only returns after three months, there's a lot of time for Drew McIntyre to have fresh new feuds until then and after that. With McIntyre being the babyface World Champion, he'll need some heels to defend the title against and RAW has enough Superstars to fill that gap.

Between WrestleMania and SummerSlam, he hardly needs two feuds. Moreover, there's no set rule that he only needs to face heels. While that's always preferred, there are plenty of babyface challengers he could go up against, with Kevin Owens and Aleister Black being two such names.

Post-SummerSlam will be equally if not more exciting, as McIntyre could go on a long run as Champion. While a long reign after winning a title at WrestleMania isn't guaranteed, it's the least they could do to invest in him long-term. They established a new main event star at WrestleMania 36 and with that, there are plenty of fresh feuds that await.

#3. A full-fledged push as WWE's top babyface

Is this the moment?
Is this the moment?

Drew McIntyre's journey back into WWE hasn't been an easy one. As you probably know, he was fired over five years ago and had to scratch and crawl to make a name for himself outside. He did that in various promotions and the independent scene before he got the call from WWE to return.

He would have instant success in NXT before re-debuting on RAW in the first quarter of 2018. It took two years, but timing is everything. Not only could McIntyre be pushed as the face of RAW, but there could be an attempt to push him to be the face of the company.

It's a different era, so WWE prefers keeping their brand name bigger than any Superstar, but they made the right call but coronating McIntyre.

We expect a full-fledged babyface push for the Scotsman and if he has a long reign and gets over well, we see no reason why he can't take that top spot for a long time to come.

#2. A complete change in creative direction on RAW

Will Brock Lesnar continue to dominate?
Will Brock Lesnar continue to dominate?

With Paul Heyman in charge of Monday Night RAW's creative department, it was clear from the start that he wanted a big change in direction. While he's the advocate of the biggest part-time Superstar in the company, he knows that it's wise to invest in the current, full-time roster more.

This is why Superstars such as Ricochet, Drew McIntyre, Kevin Owens, Aleister Black, and Murphy have benefited so much from their recent runs on RAW. Drew McIntyre may have just been the first of a few other superstars who will eventually reach main event status.

The big question is as to whether Brock Lesnar will continue having World Championship reigns. The reality is that it's highly likely and we can't truly say that Brock Lesnar had his last World Championship reign.

Since 2017, he's spent only a few months not being Champion and has won the Universal Championship three times since then and WWE Championship once. However, we still expect McIntyre to be the focus going forward.

#1. Drew McIntyre to possibly get the 'babyface treatment'

Will Drew McIntyre's popularity last for long?
Will Drew McIntyre's popularity last for long?

As much as we would like to deny it, the truth is that WWE hasn't been able to sustain a top babyface's popularity for long. While Roman Reigns' situation was entirely different, we can look at the case of Seth Rollins last year. Rollins had his coronation by beating Brock Lesnar for the Universal Championship and even beat him clean a few months later.

However, by the end of September, his popularity as a babyface had started dwindling after three years. Partly due to a series of tweets and fans being tired of babyface Seth Rollins, they turned on him and it would plant the seeds for his eventual heel turn in December.

Even when Kofi Kingston had his dream moment and won the WWE Championship, there was a lot of criticism after a few months that he was "better off chasing the title than holding it". This was something fans used to say about Dean Ambrose as well.

There's a high possibility of McIntyre's popularity dying down and an eventual need for a heel turn. Hopefully, he'll be able to sustain his popularity as a babyface.
