CM Punk has left the company, Daniel Bryan has been out injured since May, Roman Reigns is out with an injury too which cancelled his match against Rollins at Night Of Champions. Brock Lesnar is the WWE Champion and a part timer. He’s an enigma. All this has brought the entire company to fall back on the shoulders of John Cena, but that does not help much. This has put Creative and the management to put over new talent like never before. This includes investing in those characters right now instead of waiting for their injured stars or former stars to return. This has inevitably put the spotlight on the hottest feud of the year between Dean Ambrose and Seth Rollins. And rightfully so.
The Week That Was
This past episode of Raw, Ambrose opened the show with a good promo. This happened following his return 24 hours ago at the Night Of Champions Pay per View where he entered the arena in a Texas cab and did not even pay. That’s a little detail that can be ignored or not given much heed to, but to many it was noticeable and it only accentuated Ambrose’s crazy gimmick which has many hailing him to be the newest anti-hero. He took out the entire security personnel on his own in one move and then had Triple H unsuccessfully chasing him while he went on to do the same thing to Rollins. It wasn’t an official match, but it had shades of their hugely acclaimed Lumberjack match and the Raw Main event.
So, coming back to the point, Ambrose opened Raw with a promo which eventually had him calling out Rollins. The one who made his way to the ring was the perennial face of the company, John Cena. That led to an almost fight between the two. Ambrose wasn’t yelling or going wayward. He was very politely warning Cena to stay away from his bad side. But it was clear from the reaction the crowd gave that a Cena-Ambrose face off is welcome. Ambrose was seen multiple times that night. He had a match with Kane, had two backstage segments, one in which Cena and he chased away Rollins and one where he was locked inside a room. He ended the night standing tall in the ring with Cena.
That is quite something for a young star to be getting this much spotlight. Same goes for Rollins. Cena’s addition only means that this means business.
Spotlight on the Young
Ambrose is really over with the crowd. He gets one of the biggest pops today and Rollins on the other hand gets the most boos. He is turning out to be one of the finest heels. And if this momentum continues, he can be the best of his generation. Both Rollins and Ambrose are thriving in this feud and have much more of a purpose than Roman Reigns seemed to have. Roman Reigns was touted as the Chosen One, but his matches since the Shield split haven’t really set the stage on fire. His character development hasn’t been as spectacular as Ambrose or Rollins. Comparisons aren’t fair but when a superstar is seen to be the next in line to the throne, he should have something called the X-Factor. Something that stands out and makes the crowd interested all the time and get the desired reaction. This injury to Reigns can be a moment to really introspect how to put the superstar over.
While all the other absences have been nothing short of blessings in disguises for the younger lot. Ambrose and Rollins are both just 28 years old. That’s pretty young in wrestling dictionary. And they are pretty much the highlight apart from Daniel Bryan’s Wrestlemania moment.
But Creative can make or break a star. John Cena’s involvement guarantees more eyes to the feud but it does not guarantee a bright future for the superstars he’s entangled with. Look at Sandow or Bray Wyatt. Wyatts weren’t even there on Raw this week.
