Frank Lampard joined Chelsea on this day in 2001

Football2001: England midfielder Frank Lampard joined Chelsea from West Ham United and went on to fulfil an ambition to win trophies in a record-breaking spell with the club.

2012: Spain beat Ireland in the European Championship by the score of 4-0. The win sent Spain to the top of the group and they eventually reached the final, where they beat Italy 4-0 to repeat as champions.

Cricket1929: Birth of the Australian fast bowler Alan Davidson, the closest rival to Wasim Akram as the greatest left-arm seamer in history.

1977: Birth of Boeta Dippenaar, a cricketer who has played Test and One Day International cricket for South Africa and the ACA African XI.

1979: England bowled Canada out for 45 in 40.3 overs in Cricket World Cup.

Steffi Graf was born on this day in 1969

1969: Birth of Steffi Graf, a former World No. 1 German tennis player. In total, Graf won 22 Grand Slam singles titles, second among male and female players only to Margaret Court’s 24.Golf

1901: 1st golf championship is played.

1922: Charles Hoffner wins PGA golf tournament.
