Cricket

1946- Ex-Pakistani opening batsman, Majid Jahangir Khan was born on this day. One of the most fearless opening batsman produced by Pakistan. Khan’s first-class career spanned from 1961 to 1985. He played 63 Tests for Pakistan, scoring 3,931 runs and made 8 centuries. He scored over 27,000 first-class runs and made 73 first-class centuries, with 128 fifties.

1984- The first floodlit one-day international outside Australia took place in New Delhi. Kepler Wessels, who was known to be test player predominantly, broke the habit of a lifetime by playing some shots. He scored 107 runs, the only ODI hundred of his career, which led Australia to a comfortable 48-run victory over India in the first of a five-match series.

Football

1972- Ajax won the Intercontinental Cup with a 3-0 win over Independiente. As winners of the 1971 European Cup, they had qualified to face Copa Libertadores champions Nacional in that year’s Intercontinental Cup, but declined to participate. When the opportunity came again in 1972, they had a change of heart and accepted, agreeing to face Independiente in the two-legged competition.

1971- Alan Geoffrey Wright was born on this day. He is a retired English professional footballer and current manager of Southport after spells coaching at Blackpool and Northwich Victoria. He has played over 750 league and cup games for eight clubs, including an eight-year spell at Aston Villa. He played in the left-back position and was known to be the shortest player in Premier League.

Basketball

1983 - Larry Bird signed a seven-year contract with the Boston Celtics worth $15 million. The contract made him the highest paid player of Celtic in history. He is an ex-American professional basketball player and coach and the current team president of the Indiana Pacers of NBA.

1981- Jose Calderon was born on this day. A Spanish professional basketball player, Calderon currently plays for Dallas Mavericks of NBA. He started his career at NBA with Toronto Raptors in 2005 and since then has played for 3 NBA teams.

Olympics

1982- India’s first shooter to receive an Olympic gold medal, Abhinav Bindra was born on this day. Bindra had won 3 Common-wealth gold medals, 1 Asian games silver medal and the most precious Olympic gold in the the year 2008.
