The South Korean original Netflix drama Resident Playbook is reported to have been postponed until further notice. On May 16, 2024, media outlet Daily Sports reported that due to mass resignations in the medical field in South Korea and no available slot to broadcast the show on tvN, the network announced that it would be difficult to premiere the upcoming K-drama Resident Playbook, starring Go Youn-jung, Kang You-seok, and Shin Si-a.

The broadcasting network tvN announced,

"The broadcast period of ‘Resident Playbook’ is undecided. The follow-up tvN Saturday-Sunday drama to ‘The Midnight Romance in Hagwon’ is ‘The Auditors.'" (as reported by SPOTV News and translated by Soompi)

Resident Playbook was originally slated to come out in the first half of 2024. However, a wave of medical residents resigned in large numbers in March 2024, leading to severe staffing shortages at large hospitals. As a result, tvN announced that the drama was pushed to premiere in the second part of the year.

Resident Playbook: Everything we know so far about its release

A doctor's strike that began in South Korea in March 2024 spread to other parts of the country, with medical academicians there announcing plans to cut back on their practicing hours and even retire. A government plan to drastically raise medical school admissions was met with protests by over 12,000 junior physicians in South Korea who were let go from their jobs for a month.

Euro News reported that, according to officials, the plan aimed to boost the number of doctors to address the increasing aging population in the nation. However, physicians have pointed out that an abrupt and sharp rise in student enrollment at universities would ultimately degrade the standard of medical care provided in South Korea.

Resident Playbook is an extension of the popular K-drama Hospital Playlist, starring Jo Jung-suk, Jeon Mi-do, Jung Kyung-ho, and Yoo Yeon-seok. The forthcoming globally licensed South Korean medical drama series is reported to be available on Netflix alongside tvN. Lee Min-soo (Heartbeat) is the director of the series, while screenwriter Kim Song-hee (Hospital Playlist, Reply 1998) is the writer of the show.

The new spin-off drama was scheduled for a release in Q2 (2024, April–June). However, the second broadcast schedule was for July 27, 2024. According to SPOTV News, the upcoming drama The Auditors starring Shin Ha-kyun, Lee Jung-ha, is scheduled to run as the follow-up drama after tvN's current weekend drama, The Midnight Romance in Hagwon. Hence, the Saturday-Sunday slot is already booked, with no space for further additions.

After that, Mom’s Friend’s Son (literal title) starring Jung Hae-in and Jung So-min and Jung Nyeon (romanized title) starring Kim Tae-ri, Shin Ye-eun, Ra Mi-ran, and Moon So-ri are on tvN's broadcast schedule. In addition, Joo Ji-hoon and Jung Yu-mi's Love on a Single Log Bridge (literal title) will be shown toward the end of the year.
