WWE: One more chance for Captain Charisma?

WWE Smackdown Live Tour in Durban

In the WWE, there aren’t many things the management can do to make me happy. Being a fan of professional wrestling since a very young age, I’ve followed the industry for nearly 16 years. Along the way, to my misfortune or amusement, I’ve picked up the inside scoop of how the business works. Instead of getting disillusioned, I was fascinated by the professional wrestling industry. In other words, I had a new found respect for the performers and for the veterans in the business.

When you understand how everything works, and how the gears work together synchronously to churn out the product you grew up watching, you have nothing but profound respect for the business and for those who have given/are giving everything they had/have for the business.

Watching tapes of guys like Mr. Perfect, Owen Hart, Rick Rude etc. gives you a better idea about the respect these performers had for the business, and how the business owed them more than they owed to the business. In today’s industry, there are very few performers who deserve respect, more than ask for it. You have guys like The Undertaker who have selflessly worked for the industry, and have received their due recognition. Then there are performers who are grossly under rated, even after two decades of giving their everything for the fans and the business. Jason Reso, better known to us as Christian is one such performer.

Last week, Christian won the number one contender’s match on Smackdown! to become the new number one contender for the World Heavyweight championship at SummerSlam. If there is a superstar in the WWE that deserves more props than anyone else at the moment, it has to be Christian. Being one of the best workers in the business, Christian is the one performer who can have great matches with anyone, and as Randy Orton stated in a recent interview, he is the one performer everyone wants to work with. Being a veteran in the business, you’d expect Christian to have at least one long run as the WWE/World champion, but that sadly never happened.

In 2005, Christian was the biggest heel in the company, and was so over with the fans that he started getting cheered because he was so good at what he did. He was scheduled to get into a feud with the then WWE champion John Cena, but those plans were nixed and Christian left the WWE. Ever since he returned, he picked up where he left off, and has been one of the best things in the WWE. With his “peeps” getting restless about the lack of faith WWE has shown in him, WWE finally caved in and put the strap on him, only to give it to Orton within 48 hours! As the fans made their voices heard, WWE moved on with their plans, leaving Christian in the dark yet again.

So after two long years, Christian finally has the opportunity to win the World Heavyweight championship come SummerSlam. With Alberto Del Rio being unsuccessful in getting over the fans as the WWE management hoped he would, this gives Captain Charisma the perfect opportunity to win the World title once again, and cement his legacy in the company. Will Christian be able to finally win the ‘big one’ and have a respectable run as the champion before he hangs up his boots? We can only hope so and see how things unfold, but knowing WWE and the way it never recognized its top talent, it may just be hoping against hope. In a couple of weeks, we will get our answers, as SummerSlam is shaping up to be a very interesting event.
