WWE SummerSlam 2019: 3 surprising decisions so far

Summerslam is only a few hours away from us
Summerslam is only a few hours away from us

We are just hours away from the 2019 edition of the Biggest Party of the Summer, WWE SummerSlam. Being the second biggest PPV of the year for the largest wrestling promotion in the world, SummerSlam is one of the most popular wrestling events in the history of the industry.

There's always this big match feeling when it comes to any feud for SummerSlam, but not all the matches booked for the show this year fall into this category. Credit where it's due, WWE has done a decent job in building up the show, something they have received praises for from the fans as well.

But that doesn't mean that there haven't been decisions throughout the Road to SummerSlam so far that have left many scratching their heads.

Let's take a look at three surprising decisions by the company for SummerSlam 2019. Feel free to share your opinions in the comments section below.

#3 No tag team matches on the card

The RAW Tag Champs!
The RAW Tag Champs!

When was the last time a WWE PPV did not have any tag team match at all? If any of you remember the show, please let me know in the comments section, because I can't think of any.

The current card of SummerSlam 2019 has no tag team match booked so far. With as many as three tag team championships on the main roster, why would you not have any of them be defended on your second biggest PPV of the year?

The SmackDown Tag Team Champions The New Day are impressing everyone with their in-ring skills, but don't have a proper feud in place. The same goes with the RAW Tag Champions, Karl Anderson and Luke Gallows. It's great to see the two alongside AJ Styles, but putting the Tag Titles on them and not giving them a proper feud for it seems odd.

When it comes to the Women's Tag Division, we just got ourselves new champions in Alexa Bliss and Nikki Cross. One has to wonder why did that fatal-four way match not take place at SummerSlam instead of RAW.

While WWE always has the option to put on a random impromptu match for any of these titles, professional wrestling is not just about the in-ring action, but the stories as well.

#2 SummerSlam-bound matches taking place earlier

In continuation to the last two slides, one of the major reasons for the small card and no tag team match booked so far is because of them taking place before the event. I've already mentioned the Women's Tag Team Championship fatal-four way that could have easily made it to the PPV.

Other than that, we had Aleister Black and Sami Zayn compete against each other on SmackDown a couple of days ago, in a match that was supposed to take place at SummerSlam. There is no valid reason to prepone that match as Zayn and Black are the future of the company, and need to be showcased much more than any returning Hall of Famer.

Another example is that of Ali and Shinsuke Nakamura. What looked to be building towards a feud between the two for the Intercontinental Championship doesn't seem to be heading anywhere right now. So much so that Nakamura doesn't have anyone to defend his title against at the second biggest PPV of the year.

#1 Many top superstars missing out

These two deserved a place on the card!
These two deserved a place on the card!

While we will be watching two Hall of Famers returnin to the ring at SummerSlam for what might be their umpteenth last match, WWE has failed to give a place on the card to many of its top talents.

Few of the biggest names that come to my mind are Drew McIntyre and Braun Strowman. No, I would not include Roman Reigns in this category as he has a storyline and direction heading into the show, unlike the two men mentioned before him.

Both McIntyre and Strowman have the potential to be huge stars and top champions, if shown faith and given an opportunity. The best thing we can hope for is Creative to have some plans for them after the show.

Shows and cards like these make me wonder - does WWE have too big of a roster? The answer to that seems to be yes. While many promotions in the world are lacking talents, WWE has an abundance of them. Many of them doing nothing, sadly.
