What teams has D’Angelo Russell played for?

Los Angeles Lakers (2015-2017)

The American guard started his NBA journey with the Los Angeles Lakers after being selected as a second overall pick in the 2015 NBA draft. He was well known for his shooting ability, especially from the three-point range. He set a new franchise record by hitting 130 three-pointers as a rookie in a single season. He broke the 22-year-old LA Laker record, passing Nick Van Exel, who made 124 threes in 1993-94. He played two seasons with the Lakers, where he averaged 13.2 points in his rookie season and 15.6 points in his sophomore year. In both these seasons, Russell shot around 35% from the three-point range.

Brooklyn Nets (2017-2019)

In 2017, D'Angelo Russell, alongside Tim Mozgov, was traded to the Brooklyn Nets in exchange for Brook Lopez and a first-round pick. The season was a challenging one in terms of his health as he injured his left knee and, therefore, underwent surgery and was ruled out from the team after playing 48 games in the season and averaging 15.5 points per game.

Russell's first and only All-Star selection as of April 2025 came with the Brooklyn Nets in the 2018-19 season. He helped the Nets to the sixth-seed in the Eastern Conference, thus qualifying for the playoffs. He averaged 21.6 points alongside 7 assists and 3.9 rebounds per game in that season.

Golden State Warriors (2019-2020)

In 2019, Russell signed with the Golden State Warriors and played there for one season. He found the opportunity to play as the Warriors’ point guard as Stephen Curry was battling an injury. He posted his career-high of 52 points against the Minnesota Timberwolves that season, a record he is yet to break. In the absence of Curry, D’Lo led the Warriors' offence and thus had his best scoring stint for any team he has played for as of April 2025. In the 33 games he played for the San Francisco franchise, he averaged 23.6 points alongside 3.7 rebounds and 6.2 assists per game.

Minnesota Timberwolves (2020-2023)

In 2020, Russell was traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves along with Jacob Evans and Omari Spellman in a mid-season trade that led to the Warriors landing Andrew Wiggins to their squad. Russell played 3 seasons for Minnesota, averaging around 18 points for the franchise. In his last two seasons with the team before being traded away, Russell became an integral part of the lineup, starting all games for the franchise.

Los Angeles Lakers (2023-25)

In February 2023, D’Angelo Russell was traded back to the team that drafted him, the Los Angeles Lakers. Here, his game style was perfectly fitting in the Lakers squad, and thus, he started for the Lakers in most of the games, especially in the 2022-23 playoffs. Russell, alongside Lebron James and Anthony Davis, reached the Western Conference Finals, where they succumbed to the eventual champions, the Denver Nuggets, led by Nikola Jokic.

D’Angelo Russell and the Lakers had a disappointing playoff run in the 2023-24 NBA season, where they were eliminated by the Denver Nuggets once again, this time in the first round of the playoffs. The Lakers shuffled the roster the next season, and as a result, Russell was again sent to the Brooklyn Nets mid-season.

Brooklyn Nets (2025 - Present)

As history repeated itself, Russell was acquired by the Brooklyn Nets once again. He was traded by the Lakers alongside Maxwell Lewis and three second round picks in exchange for Dorian Finney-Smith and Shake Milton. Since then, Russell has played 29 games for the team and has averaged 12.9 points along with 5.6 assists per game.
