A true star on both ends of the court in today’s NBA is the Los Angeles Clippers small forward Kawhi Leonard. The two-time Finals MVP has the capacity to put the team on his back on any given night and guide them to victory just like several other superstars in the league. But what Leonard brings to the Clippers is quite rare as his two-way play is an advantage not many teams can boast of.

The 32-year old is also a proven winner having won championships with two different franchises in the Spurs and the Raptors. His Finals MVP performance with the Spurs may have come as a surprise as the team was already loaded with big-name stars such as Tim Duncan, Tony Parker, and Manu Ginobili.

Kawhi Leonard Nationality

Kawhi Leonard is an American by nationality. He was born on June 29, 1991 in Los Angeles, California. He comes from a mixed ethnicity of African-American.

The 6 foot 7 inch small forward attended Canyon Springs High School before transferring to Martin Luther King High School, both in California. He was rated as a four-star recruit coming out of high school.

The five-time All-Star then went to San Diego State University and played basketball for the San Diego State Aztecs team. Leonard only played two years of college basketball, but he made quite an impact leading the team to back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances. In 2011, he entered the NBA draft where he would eventually get selected with the 15th overall pick.

Kawhi Leonard NBA Journey

Kawhi Leonard actually started his NBA career in 2011 with the San Antonio Spurs. He was drafted by the Indiana Pacers, but was traded instantly to the Spurs. Under brilliant head coach Gregg Popovich, the former Spurs player developed into a great player, both offensively and defensively. He went on to lead the team to an NBA championship in 2014. His six-year stay with the Spurs ended in 2018 as he was traded to the Toronto Raptors.

Leonard was in Toronto only for one season, but that was enough for him to lead the team to their first-ever NBA championship in franchise history. As the number two seed from the Eastern Conference that season, they had to go through the number one seeded Milwaukee Bucks in the Eastern Conference Finals and then the number one seeded in the west the Golden State Warriors in the NBA Finals.

After clinching the title with Toronto, Leonard decided to go back home and join the Clippers as a free agent in 2019. The move to the Clippers was seen as a fairy tale move as he was coming home to try and win a championship. Unfortunately for him, though, the past four years have proven to be nothing but heartbreak, especially since the team has been capable of making deep runs.

A shocking loss in the 2020 Western Conference semifinals to the Denver Nuggets after holding a 3-1 series advantage was a complete failure. Following that, Leonard has faced multiple injuries in his next trips to the playoffs giving rise to the question of whether or not he can remain healthy when it’s crunch time.
