Lauri Elias Markkanen is a Finnish basketball small forward/power forward for the Utah Jazz in the National Basketball Association (NBA). Nicknamed "the Finnisher,” Markkanen was born on May 22, 1997, in Vantaa, Finland. His parents Pekka and Riikka Markkanen were also professional Finnish basketball players.
Markkanen moved to the United States for higher studies and played college basketball for the Arizona Wildcats. He was selected to the third team All-American team by the Associated Press, NBC Sports, USA Today, and the Sporting News in 2017. After averaging 15.6 points and 7.2 rebounds as a freshman, Markkanen declared for the 2017 NBA Draft, foregoing his final three years of college eligibility.
Markkanen was picked up by the Minnesota Timberwolves with the seventh pick in the first round of the 2017 NBA Draft. However, he was traded to the Chicago Bulls on draft night.
After four seasons in Chicago, Markkanen was acquired by the Cleveland Cavaliers in a three-team sign-and-trade in 2021. He averaged 14.8 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 1.3 assists on 44.5% from the field, including 35.8% from deep in his one season in Cleveland.
Markkanen was then traded to the Utah Jazz in September 2022. He was named to his first-ever All-Star game on February 2, 2023, becoming the first NBA All-Star born in a Nordic country. In the 2022/23 season for the Jazz, Markkanen averaged an impressive 25.6 points and 8.6 rebounds per game.
