He initially played collegiate basketball for the Ohio State Buckeyes men's basketball team at Ohio State University from 2016 to 2019, and later transferred to play for the Wisconsin Badgers from 2019 to 2021. He was named to the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Award preseason watch list during his senior season. Potter finished his collegiate career with averages of 7.6 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 0.6 assists in 15.9 minutes per game over 111 games. He was redshirted in his first season( 2018-2019 ) due to transfer rules.
Potter entered the 2021 NBA draft but went undrafted. He participated in the 2021 NBA Summer League with the Miami Heat and signed a contract with them on September 10, 2024. However, he was among the final roster cuts during training camp and subsequently joined the Sioux Falls Skyforce in the G-League that year. Additionally, Potter signed a ten-day with the Detroit Pistons on December 29, 2021, and afterward, he rejoined the Skyforce for the remainder of the season. Potter also played for the New York Knicks in the 2022 NBA Summer League. He signed a two-way contract with the Jazz on October 12, 2022, and also began playing for the Salt Lake City Stars in the NBA G League.
