After a high-octane battle, the Michigan Wolverines emerged as national champions for the 2023 season by defeating the Washington Huskies. Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh finally succeeded in his quest to lead the Wolverines to a title since taking over back in 2015.

Michigan dominated at the NRG Stadium and cruised to a 34-13 win. However, the Washington fanbase was incensed by a holding call that negated a huge play for the Huskies.

"MICHIGAN PAID OFF THE REFS," one fan said.

Other fans that Michigan had not been flagged for similar actions in previous plays:

Washington's offense was already having a tough time coping with Michigan's defense. Michael Penix Jr. recorded only 255 passing yards and one touchdown with two interceptions.

Referees call off a big play for Washington due to holding

One of the biggest plays for the Huskies was chalked off due to a holding penalty. They had a 2nd-and-10 on their own 33-yard line when Michael Penix Jr. found Rome Odunze, who stumbled out of bounds after making the catch. At the time, the Huskies were trailing 20-13 in the fourth quarter.

Unfortunately for Washington, the play was called back because of a holding penalty against right tackle Roger Rosengarten. His left hand hooked the shoulder of Michigan Edge rusher Braiden McGregor. This led to the referees throwing a flag and ultimately negating a 32-yard play.
