The edition in 2022 is going to be like the one in 2011, where 10 teams battled it hard to get to the knockout stage and test the strength of the stirred up teams.

IPL History and Format

The Indian Premier League was initiated in the year 2008 by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). The inaugural edition saw 8 teams playing a double round robin league stage followed by the semi-finals and final.

A big change in the format is that the top four teams in the IPL 2022 points table play the ‘Playoffs’ that have replaced the traditional ‘semi-final and final’ knockouts. The IPL score is available when the match goes on everyday.

The big change that the tournament will have to the traditional 8-team format is now there will be no double round robin stage due to the sheer length of the tournament. All teams will still be playing 14 games each - twice against five teams and once against the remaining four.

IPL 2022 Budget and Expected Revenue

The IPL brand value is consistently on a rise every season. In 2016, the IPL was valued at $ 4.16 billion (approx INR 282 billion). It increased to $ 5.3 billion (approx INR 341 billion) in 2017, to $ 6.13 billion (approx INR 429 billion) in 2018 and $ 6.7 billion (approx INR 475 billion) in 2019.

The increase in brand value was 27.4% in 2017, 15.66% in 2018 and 9.3% in 2019. These statistics suggest that there will be an increase in 2020. The COVID-19 pandemic decreased the tournament’s brand value by 22% to $ 4.4 billion (approx 320 billion). It has now grown by 7% despite the pandemic struggles in 2021 and has reached $ 4.7 billion (approx 360 billion).

With the increase in people interested in IPL live match and IPL score, the brand value is expected to bounce back to its original value.

What’s new in IPL 2022?

  1. Crowd back in Indian stadiums
  2. Lucknow Supergiants and Gujarat Titans
  3. Mixed set of teams
  4. Teams divided in four groups

The Indian fans will once again be allowed inside the stadiums to watch the IPL as the Maharashtra government has allowed fully-vaccinated citizens to use upto 25% of the crowd capacity per game.

Lucknow Super Giants and the Gujarat Titans will make their debuts in IPL 2022 after being drafted into the tournament in October 2021. A 10-team tournament will give the fans a major throwback of IPL 2011.

At the mega auction held on 12 and 13 February 2022, a complete juggling of the players saw players go back to their previous franchises, or to new franchises where they have never been to. Fans will be enthralled watching their favourite players play for different teams and still bring on to the field the same energy to entertain.

For IPL 2022, the ten participating teams have been divided into two groups of five teams each. Group A consists of Mumbai Indians, Kolkata Knight Riders, Rajasthan Royals, Delhi Capitals and Lucknow Super Giants. Group B consists of Chennai Super Kings, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Punjab Kings and Gujarat Titans. Each team will play two games against teams in their own group and one team from the other group. They will also play one match each against the remaining four teams in the other group.
