Junior National Hockey: Haryana, Punjab, Karnataka enter quarters

Lucknow - Punjab entered the quarterfinals of the junior men’s hockey championship with a 15-0 win over Gujarat at the Major Dhyan Chand Stadium here on Thursday.

Mandeep Singh scored four goals for Punjab.

Punjab will meet spirited MP Hockey Academy (Bhopal) in the quarterfinals on Friday.

Defending champions Haryana also booked their berth in the round of eight, defeating Bengal 4-1. Gagandeep Singh, Gurjant Singh and Nikhil were the goal scorers for Haryana, while Rohit Thakur scored for Bengal. Haryana will now take on Himachal Pradesh for a place in the semifinals.

SAI Bhopal defeated Uttarakhand 16-2 to make the quarterfinals ahead of Maharashtra, whose 5-3 win against Tamil Nadu was not enough to take it to the knockout stage.

Karnataka too staged a fine show to beat Jammu and Kashmir 7-1, completing the quarterfinal line-up. She She Gowda and Aiyappa PR Paradanda shared four goals between them.
