Clyde Edwards-Helaire is the running back spot for the Kansas City Chiefs. Helaire decided to forgo his senior year and enter the 2020 NFL draft. Due to his outstanding play in LSU, the Kansas City Chiefs drafted him as the 32nd overall pick in round one of the 2020 NFL draft. Helaire had a red-hot start to his NFL career because he had 803 rushing yards, four rushing touchdowns, 36 receptions, 297 receiving yards, and a receiving touchdown. A lack of consistent production and injuries has resulted in Helaire losing his starting position to other players. In comparison, he had 302 rushing yards and three TDs in 2022 and 223 rushing yards and a single touchdown in 2023.
He was born and raised in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and attended Catholic High School. Helaire was the first freshman player, under former head coach Dale Weiner’s 29-year heading coaching career, to play as a freshman in the varsity football team.
In addition to football, Helaire also competed in track and field. In his senior year, Helaire finished with 496 yards and 10 touchdowns and was also named as the MVP of the 5A State Championship Game. He was a four-star high school recruit and committed to playing college football for LSU (Louisiana State University).
At LSU, Helaire continued playing in the running back spot and spent three seasons with the team from 2017-2019, skipping the senior year. 2019 was the year he really took off with 1415 rushing yards, 16 rushing touchdowns, 55 receptions, 453 receiving yards, and one receiving touchdown. His 1415 rushing yards were ranked third most in LSU’s history and he also was named to the First-team All-SEC while becoming the CFP national champion in 2019.
