WWE: Talking Points from SummerSlam 2013

We’re done with the SummerSlam PPV, and what an event it was!

Going into the event, everyone expected “The big three” to deliver, and they did. Christian took on Alberto in a phenomenal championship match, and that was followed by a Punk – Lesnar classic. Cena – Bryan closed the show, and the main event made sure that the fans left the PPV buzzing. A lot of things went down last night at SummerSlam.

So what were the major talking points coming out of the show? In this article, I take a look at the five major talking points from the SummerSlam PPV.

5. ‘Wyatt’ a disaster!

Starting off with the not – so – good part of the PPV; the opening bout on the main card was between Kane and Bray Wyatt in a “Ring of Fire” match, and it turned out to be a massive disappointment. Not only was Bray Wyatt in an unfamiliar territory, thus being unable to work the match properly, there was also no point to this bout.

It would’ve been much better had it been a normal one – on – one match or any other stipulation, but the “Ignore the fire in the inferno match” made the whole thing pointless. Although, Kane was taken out in the end, as his head was sandwiched between the steel steps, and the Wyatt Family carried him to the back. This was probably the biggest disappointment of the night, and in the fans eyes, it was something that could and should have been avoided.

Natalya brie bella

4. Natalya wins both her matches

It was predictable for Natalya to win her Axxess match along with Maria, but it came as a wonderful surprise when she defeated Brie Bella on the main card. Natalya is one of the best ‘wrestlers’ in the world, and the fact that she was overlooked for years made this all the more surprising.

The Bellas are the uncrowned queens of the WWE, with them dating the two biggest names in the organization, and hence, Natalya’s win over Brie Bella signals a future title shot for the young Neidhart. Will Natalya be the new number one contender for the WWE Divas championship? Let’s hope so.

Del rio

3. A black eye on the World champion

When Alberto Del Rio came to the ring to defend his World Heavyweight championship, there was something different about him. Before he even made his way out, Michael Cole said that Del Rio was sporting the after effects of the Killswitch by Christian on Smackdown!, and sure enough, Del Rio was sporting a black eye and some other facial scarring.

Rumour has it that Del Rio and Drew McIntyre were involved in a fight with some other people, and even though the details aren’t clear yet, it was evident that Del Rio didn’t face any punishment or ‘heat’ from the management. Del Rio went on to defeat Christian for the World Heavyweight championship, and one has to see where he goes from here.

CM Punk vs Brock Lesnar

2. Punk – Lesnar tear down the Staples Center

Going into the SummerSlam PPV, I predicted Punk and Lesnar to blow everyone away, and put on an amazing performance. As I predicted, it wasn’t a classic ‘wrestling’ match, but the two athletes went toe to toe and put on a brutal match! Lesnar came out on top in the end, which was the right call, as this leaves a door open for a future match between the two.

The fans chanted that the match was awesome, and it was indeed true. They both arguably stole the show, and put on a show that the fans won’t soon forget.

1. Dreams shattered and loyalties forgotten

The main event of the PPV delivered, as John Cena and Daniel Bryan slugged it out for almost 30 minutes, with Cena raising his game for his bout against the greatest technical wrestler of this generation, Daniel Bryan. In the end, Daniel Bryan realized his lifelong dream of becoming the WWE champion when he pinned John Cena in the middle of the ring as Staples Center came unglued!

The fans roared as Daniel Bryan’s hand was raised as the victor, and after Cena congratulated Bryan and the confetti fell, Orton’s music hit as he teased cashing – in his Money in the Bank contract. But the biggest shocker of the night came when Triple H betrayed Bryan and pedigreed him, enabling Orton to cash – in his briefcase and pin Bryan to become the new WWE champion! What will happen now? We can only wait for this week’s edition of Monday Night RAW to get all our answers.
