Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s skills and abilities as a point guard are simply remarkable. He was drafted 11th overall by the Charlotte Hornets in 2018, and was traded to the LA Clippers the same day. Gilgeous-Alexander entered the NBA after a stellar freshman season with the University of Kentucky, a college known for producing some of the most talented basketball players.

After a respectable rookie season with the Clippers, Gilgeous-Alexander was traded to the OKC Thunder, where he is the starting point guard. Last season, Gilgeous-Alexander averaged 31.4 points, 4.8 rebounds and 5.5 assists per game in 68 games played.

When asked why he changed schools twice before coming to Hamilton Heights, Gilgeous-Alexander said that he wanted to play against better competition to improve his skills. He averaged 18.4 points, 4.4 rebounds and 4.0 assists per game as a senior in high school.

Coming out of High School, he was a four-star recruit and received offers from top colleges like Syracuse, Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Florida and others. After careful consideration, Gilgeous-Alexander committed to Kentucky in November 2016 and enrolled on June 1, 2017.


College Career

Playing under Coach John Calipari, Gilgeous-Alexander wasted no time in becoming a standout player for his college team, averaging 14.4 points, 4.1 rebounds, 5.1 assists, 1.6 steals, and 0.5 blocks per game in 37 games played. He shot an impressive 48.5% from the field and 40.4% from 3-point range.

Gilgeous-Alexander’s gameplay was fast but relied on the basics. At 6 feet 6 inches tall (1.98 meters), he has excellent ball-handling skills, can shoot off the dribble, has great court vision and can also defend the perimeter.


NBA Career

In five NBA seasons, Gilgeous-Alexander has averaged 21.1 points, 4.6 rebounds and 4.5 assists per game, on 48.4% shooting from the field, including 34.7% from deep. He has shown great ability to learn from his experience and has demonstrated steady improvement in his game. In his past three seasons, he has averaged above 20 points per game while keeping his other stats consistent.

He represented Team Canada in the FIBA World Cup, which took place in August and September 2023. Canada was in Group H along with France, Latvia and Lebanon. Canada was without superstar guard Jamal Murray for the FIBA World Cup, as he announced that he needed more time to recover after helping the Denver Nuggets win their first championship last season. With Murray missing, Gilgeous-alexander carried the team on his back and guided them to a Bronze placed position with a victory over USA.
