UP, Haryana win sub-junior hockey nationals

New Delhi - Uttar Pradesh defeated Punjab 5-4 via a penalty shoot-out in a nerve wracking final of the Sub-Junior Boys Hockey National Championship (North Zone) at Rudrapur, Uttrakhand, Saturday.

The match ended in a 1-1 draw after the regulation time and 15-minutes of extra time. Uttar

Pradesh scored its opening goal in the fourth minute through Amit Kumar Singh before Punjab levelled the score in the 26th minute with a field goal by Shamsher Singh. In a shoot-out Abhay Kumar, Dhananjay Yadav, Abhay Singh and Aithsham Khan scored for Uttar Pradesh while Manpreet Singh, Lawerence and Harjeet Singh for Punjab.

Haryana beat Uttarakhand 4-1 in the 3/4th position match.

In the girls category, Haryana defeated Uttar Pradesh 6-0 to win the title.

Haryana scored through Arshiya Singh (18th and 34th minute), Khushboo (21st minute), Mohini (31st minute), Siddhi Singh (44th minute) and Shweta Singh (59th minute).

Punjab beat Uttarakhand 5-0 for third place.
