Commentary

The action shifts to Group 2 as Zimbabwe and the Netherlands lock horns before India take on Asian rivals Bangladesh later in the evening. It was a contest they could ill-afford to lose and on the big night, it was Jos Buttler who led from the front, capping off a memorable 100th outing in T20Is. A win against Sri Lanka is what they'll be eyeing when they walk out to the SCG on Saturday. They will know what needs to be done and by what margin they must win should both Australia and New Zealand get to 7 points before them. New Zealand will be playing Ireland on Friday before the Aussies take on Afghanistan with both those matches taking place at the Adelaide Oval. It's hotting up in Group 1 and a lot of permutations and combinations will go up in the air as the teams scramble around to nail down a spot in the semis.

Time to hear again from England's captain, Jos Buttler: (On Hales) He played brilliantly. We know what he's capable of. He's been one of the in-form T20 players in a long time and he's got his chance again. Very easy to critique performance after a couple of low scores but in T20s you have to back players. You're playing a high-risk game so you have to keep encouraging them to keep pushing the game on. It got a little bit wet which might have been the only thing changing the wicket. We were aiming for 160-165 and managed to push beyond that. We've had quite a bit of success batting first and had success in the games against Australia too before the World Cup. It's certainly something we can be brave with and take that option. I thought it was definitely the right option today. (Dew in the second half?) It was a little bit damp but a couple of games on this surface, watching Moeen Ali bowling the first over, it made me happy that we got runs on the board. (On Moeen dropping Phillips) I thought he wasn't going to get there initially (laughs). He's been bowling really well but it was one of those wet mitts. (Playing Sri Lanka after New Zealand and Australia are done playing an advantage?) I think so. First and foremost we need to try and win the game but knowing what exactly needs to be done will give us a bit of a benefit.

Kane Williamson (New Zealand Captain): Credit to the way England played. They put us under pressure with the bat. We struggled to make those breakthroughs to change the momentum. But they played beautifully led by Jos and Hales at the top. In the second half we needed some things to go our way but hats off to the way England played. Probably slightly above (par) but it is what it is. You try and target certain areas and take it deep. But we weren't able to get ahead of the game. Credit to the way they bowled - they used the big side really well. (On dropping Jos Buttler) He's one of if not the best player n the world so you don't want to be doing that. If you do he'll make you pay which he did. He played a beautiful knock in a big game for them. (On his catch attempt) I thought I squeezed it into my chest. A bit embarrassing in the end but yeah, one of those things. (On Glenn Phillips) He's been batting beautifully well on some challenging wickets too - certainly the last one where he got a hundred and today as well. He completely changed the momentum of the game. He's super clear about how to go about his business. Long may that continue. Any tournament you go into you're going to be put under pressure at different times. We've got to take the positives out of it and a few lessons as well and move on.

Jos Buttler is the Player of the Match for his stellar 73-run knock. Here's what he has to say: I said at the toss that you don't become a bad team over night. We have some great and dangerous players and a lot of confidence. We turned in a good performance today. It is quite a ruthless tournament. We remember last year South Africa went out despite winning 4 out of 5 games. In the World Cup you expect to be under pressure and win games against the best teams in the world. We bat deep and allows us to take it on an over earlier than you might otherwise. I thought Alex Hales played a great knock and got us off to a start. That set us on our way. It is important in those partnerships - one day it might be myself, one day it might be him. (On eclipsing Eoin Morgan as the leading run-getter for England in T20Is) Individual things are nice to look back on at the end of your career. On the day you look to do the job for our side. We've got to be flexible with our batting order - the game shapes in different ways. We would have benefitted having the left-hander a little bit earlier as well. Moeen Ali bowled a fantastic first over.

They were given a scare of some kind were the Three Lions. Especially after Moeen Ali handed Glenn Phillips a lifeline on the field and the latter took the game by the scruff of the neck. But England's death bowlers held their nerve and turned in a masterful display in a crunch game, vaulting them to second position in Group 1 behind New Zealand and ahead of Australia with net run-rate being the only factor separating them.

Moeen got the ball to turn sharply in the first over and had Devon Conway lost at sea before Chris Woakes used the slower one to prize him out. Kane Williamson took some time to get acclimatized to the pitch again but even though Finn Allen was looking confident, he couldn't make a substantial contribution, leaving the Blackcaps in a limbo.

The slower ones were of full value and England ensured the asking rate continued to rise. Glenn Phillips rode his luck, nearly chopping one onto his stumps before Moeen handed him a lease of hope. And didn't he capitalize on it thereafter - consecutive sixes off Adil Rashid rubbed the pressure back on the Poms while he also ran like a bullet between the wickets again. Williamson found the odd boundary but run-scoring wasn't as easy at his end as it was for Phillips.

Ben Stokes was suddenly thrown the ball with a couple of big overs bringing the game back in the balance. And he struck with the wicket of Williamson when he was set on 40. While it was a crawl, that wicket deterred the Blackcaps since it wasn't easy for the new batter to get going on a double-paced surface. Phillips was starved of strike himself and Mark Wood and Chris Woakes combined to bowl a couple of stupendous overs. While Wood cranked up the speedometers, Woakes used his slower ones to perfection.

It all came down to Phillips to then pull off a jailbreak as England kept chipping away at the wickets. His wicket was the last straw and that meant that there was no way back for the Blackcaps with Sam Curran finishing it off with yet another impeccable spell at the death. The Three Lions are back to winning ways and keep their campaign right on track.

Fabulous display at the death by England and they have put on an absolute masterclass to win by a handsome margin. And their campaign is right back on track now. New Zealand have been handed their first defeat of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2022!

Curran lets out a shriek of joy and you can see what this means to England! They might have arrived at this T20 World Cup party late, but they are here now, alright!

Nitin Menon wanted to signal a wide, but waited to see if Buttler would send it upstairs. It hits nothing but there's no harm in sending it upstairs at this stage.
