Welcome to the WWE SummerSlam 2020 Preview! We're in for the Biggest Party of the Summer and the ThunderDome will feature eight matches that should result in an epic SummerSlam 2020 pay-per-view.
There's a lot to get into, so let's jump right into the expected headliner of SummerSlam 2020!
#8. Drew McIntyre (c) vs Randy Orton - WWE Championship match and the Summerslam 2020 main event
The expected main event of WWE SummerSlam is none other than Drew McIntyre vs Randy Orton for the WWE Championship. We've been saying for a while that Randy Orton is the perfect opponent for Drew McIntyre at SummerSlam 2020.
Two main factors played into Randy Orton becoming Drew McIntyre's SummerSlam 2020 opponent. Firstly, the rosters on both RAW and SmackDown have been relatively thin, with many stars taking time away due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Secondly, Randy Orton has used this opportunity to become one of the hottest stars in WWE again - taking it to the next level, arguably evolving from his legend killer persona.
This has certainly been the closest we've seen Randy Orton get to his old legend killer persona. And in his recent run, he's taken out Edge, Christian, Big Show, and most recently, Ric Flair.
Drew McIntyre has been a great WWE Champion so far, having great pay-per-view title matches against Seth Rollins, Bobby Lashley, and Dolph Ziggler. Randy Orton is the most logical opponent for Drew McIntyre at SummerSlam 2020 and it's going to be an intense main event.
As mentioned above, Drew McIntyre has been a strong WWE Champion. But we can see a scenario where Randy Orton becomes a fourteen-time World Champion at SummerSlam 2020. It wouldn't be surprising to see the entire betrayal to Ric Flair turn out to be a big hoax - with The Nature Boy returning and turning heel to help Randy Orton win the WWE title at SummerSlam 2020.
#7. Bayley (c) vs Asuka - SmackDown Women's Championship at SummerSlam 2020
SummerSlam 2020 will be one of the biggest nights of Asuka's career. Thanks to Naomi's victory against Bayley on SmackDown, the women's Grand Slam Champion Asuka will compete for the SmackDown Women's Championship against Bayley first.
Asuka had already secured a RAW Women's Championship match at SummerSlam 2020 by beating Bayley on RAW. But she also secured a SmackDown Women's title match by winning the Triple Brand Battle Royal.
Bayley has been a great Champion for over 315 days now - and that may not stop anytime soon. Bayley's recent losing-streak could be an indicator of a big win coming at SummerSlam 2020.
#6. Sasha Banks (c) vs Asuka - RAW Women's Championship
Sasha Banks is only the RAW Women's Champion due to a technicality - via count-out. It was allowed in the match and Asuka chose to rescue Kairi Sane from her assault by Bayley - sacrificing the RAW Women's Championship in the process.
Asuka doesn't have Kairi Sane by her side for SummerSlam 2020. And she's going to struggle a bit to beat Sasha Banks in a match that we expect to take place immediately after the SmackDown Women's title match.
This will be Asuka's second match of the night at SummerSlam 2020 and we expect her to overcome Sasha Banks clean to win back the RAW Women's Championship.
#5. The Street Profits (c) vs Andrade and Angel Garza - RAW Tag Team Championship at SummerSlam 2020
The Street Profits will defend the RAW Tag Team titles at SummerSlam 2020 against Andrade and Angel Garza. The Street Profits have been Tag Team Champions since February. This is the longest reign with the titles since New Day's historic run with the titles between 2015-2016 (before it was rebranded to the RAW Tag Team Championship).
During that time, nobody had gotten poisoned. But that's exactly what happened to Montez Ford and the footage revealed on RAW (thanks to Samoa Joe) showed that Zelina Vega was behind the poisoning.
Montez Ford is back, but SummerSlam 2020 seems like the perfect time for new Champions to ascend the throne. And we expect Andrade and Angel Garza to triumph at SummerSlam 2020.
#4. Apollo Crews (c) vs MVP - United States Championship
Apollo Crews has had the best run of his career in the COVID-era of WWE and SummerSlam 2020 will prove to be another big test for him as he faces MVP again for the United States Championship.
The Hurt Business has been getting the better of Apollo Crews. Could they end up costing him the title at SummerSlam 2020?
#3. Mandy Rose vs Sonya Deville - No DQ; Loser leaves WWE match at SummerSlam 2020
This match may not steal the show at SummerSlam 2020, but it certainly has one of the highest stakes on the entire card. While it was originally a Hair vs. Hair match, Sonya Deville revealed her true animosity towards Mandy Rose (and has improved rapidly of late) to the extent that she made it a No Disqualification match, stipulating that the loser will have to leave WWE.
We can't be sure of who's the one that's going to have to leave. But it's a shame that one has to leave at SummerSlam 2020, just when they were both gaining momentum. This is a grudge feud and it'll be hard to predict who is going to leave WWE.
#2. Seth Rollins vs Dominik Mysterio - Street Fight
Dominik Mysterio will be making his debut at WWE SummerSlam 2020. We've only seen glimpses of what he's capable of, but the big question heading into this encounter is how a rookie with zero matches under his belt can possibly overcome one of the best in the world.
Rey Mysterio will be in his son's corner, as will Murphy for Seth Rollins. The Street Fight stipulation could either work in Dominik Mysterio's favor or go completely against him.
It would be great to see Dominik win and avenge his father Rey Mysterio. But based on experience, it's hard to see how that's going to be possible.
#1. Braun Strowman (c) vs 'The Fiend' Bray Wyatt - Falls Count Anywhere Match for the Universal Championship at SummerSlam 2020
One of the main marquee matches of SummerSlam 2020 will be the Universal Championship match between Braun Strowman and 'The Fiend' Bray Wyatt. While the feud hasn't exactly set the world on fire, it's still a match with a lot of history between the two.
We hadn't seen 'The Fiend' since WrestleMania 36 - that was up until recently when he returned at the end of the Swamp match and then on SmackDown to attack Alexa Bliss. The entire rivalry has been nothing short of bizarre and it's going to culminate at SummerSlam 2020 when Braun Strowman finally goes head-to-head with 'The Fiend' Bray Wyatt.
It's going to be a good but short match. Braun Strowman has completely changed since The Swamp Match at Extreme Rules 2020 and his entire persona seems to have taken a wicked turn. It's true that everybody changes after encountering 'The Fiend'. And we wouldn't be surprised to see this be the end of Braun Strowman's Universal Championship reign at SummerSlam 2020.
