7 Minecraft mod features that are better than vanilla

Minecraft has seen major changes over its many updates. Its earliest versions would be unrecognizable if not for the distinct blocky art style. There was no HP, hunger, resource management, crafting, or mining. Over the last 15 years or so, Mojang Studios has worked diligently to add new, exciting features to the game. But they haven't been the only ones working to make vanilla features better.

The modding community has created tens of thousands, if not more, of mods for the game over the years, building on and expanding on this incredible foundation built by Mojang. Detailed below are seven different areas of the game that modders have expanded and revamped to the point of being unrecognizable.

7 vanilla Minecraft features done better by mobs

1) Biomes/World Gen

Many of Minecraft's best seeds are considered so due to the stunning terrain and biomes they can have within them. However, this is one area of the vanilla game that the community has more than covered. Some of Minecraft's best overhaul mods are mods like Terralith, Biomes O' Plenty, and Oh, The Biomes You'll Go, all of which affect the biomes and terrain of a world to some degree.

These biomes added via mods also tend to be brighter and livelier than many other biomes found in the vanilla game. However, additions like the armadillo from the recent Armored Paws update are a sign that Mojang is working to fix this.

2) Structure Variety

Structure variety is another space that the modding community has bettered Mojang in. That's not to say the developer isn't still adding fun new structures, as the upcoming Minecraft trial chambers are proof enough of that. But there are thousands of different amazing mods for structures, including YUNG's mods, Repurposed Structures, Additional Structures, and When Dungeons Arise.

Any one of these would give the vanilla game a run for its money. In fact, being able to use all of them at once means there's no competition.

3) Biome mob variety

One of the longest-running complaints about vanilla biomes is how they lack uniqueness. Almost all biomes have the same generic set of passive and hostile Minecraft mobs, with occasional biome-specific mobs here and there. This is another area that mods handle better, due to how many mods add mobs.

There are mods like Twilight Forest, which add new dimensions and are filled with unique mobs and bosses, as well as others like Naturalist and Alex's Mobs, which instead aim to solve the issue of overworld biome diversity by adding dozens of animals.

These are all amazing and worth adding to any custom Minecraft modpack, especially since many can be used at once to send the world's species count soaring.

4) Inventory Solutions

As more items are added to the game, the inventory problem grows larger. There's simply not enough space available for lugging items around, especially as new items are being added and expansions to old items. Mojang's solution is the yet-to-be-officially implemented bundle. That said, modders have come up with their own effective solutions.

There are two main backpack mods out there: Sophisticated Backpacks and Traveler's Backpacks, both of which are craftable and can be equipped. These can be accessed with a hotkey and act as a second inventory. But there are also storage mods like Carry On, which make it possible to pick up and move chests and barrels, besides other entities.

This means that modders have beaten Mojang when it comes to both features and quality of life in terms of storage.

5) Ambiance

The different terrain and gorgeous biomes found throughout Minecraft's prettiest seeds are major driving factors behind how immersive survival worlds can be and feel. Thanks to mods like AmbientSounds 5, the immersion can be cranked even higher.

This mod adds a variety of new wildlife and nature sounds throughout Minecraft's many biomes, which can start to feel real, especially when playing using headphones. These mods might overhaul a small portion of the game, but they completely change the feel of exploration for the better.

6) Farming

There is no shortage of players who spend their time farming rather than mining or fighting mobs. And while the base crops are fine, the added variety through mods like Farmer's Delight pushes the farming experience to the next level.

They do this by adding several new crops. For example, Farmer's Delight adds cabbage, onion, tomato, and rice, as well as more than four dozen different cooked dishes made through several new crafting stations. This greatly expands not only the farming aspects of the game but also the post-processing of these crops, adding to the rustic charm of living a simple farm life.

7) Auto-crafting

Automated crafting is a concept found in most of Minecraft's best technical mods, and for good reason. Being able to automatically process the outputs of different farms and machines is a huge boon for efficiency, and oftentimes, creating these advanced farms is a fun project to work on after reaching the endgame.

Even Mojang has dabbled with automated crafting, with Minecraft's upcoming crafter block set to revolutionize vanilla farms. But there are already better automated crafting and expanded machinery mods available, such as the Create mod.

This is one of the game's most well-known mods, and for good reason. It adds an incredible swath of features, ranging from windmills, waterwheels, harvesters, and planters. Hopefully, the vanilla game eventually reaches this level of automation, but for now, only mods like the previously mentioned Create mod offer such an experience.
