Markkanen’ basketball journey began in the HBA-Märsky (Finnish second-tier league), and later he moved to the United States, where he played college basketball at University of Arizona. In his freshman season, Markkanen averaged 15.6 points, 7.2 rebounds, and 0.9 assists in 37 games. He was named on the 2017 All-Pac-12 First-team and the Pac-12 All-Freshman team.
After just one season in college, Markkanen declared for the 2017 Draft, where he was selected with the seventh overall pick by the Minnesota Timberwolves.
