Born in Flower Mound, Texas, Marcus Osmond Smart is an American point guard who plays for the Memphis Grizzlies. Now in his 10th NBA season, Smart is known for his tenacity as a perimeter defender and leadership skills.


Smart’s basketball journey began at Edward S. Marcus High School, where he became a two-time 5A state champion along with being named McDonald’s All-American. He graduated from high school as a five-star recruit and committed to Oklahoma State for college. In two college seasons, Smart averaged 16.6 points and 2.9 steals. He also won the 2013 Big 12 POY award and received First team All-Big 12 selection twice.


The Boston Celtics drafted Smart sixth overall in 2014, where he played for nine seasons. He was an important part of the Celtics team that advanced to the NBA Finals in 2022. He was also named Defensive Player of the Year that season.


In the 2023 offseason, Smart was traded to the Memphis Grizzlies as part of a three-team trade which sent Kristaps Porzingis to the Celtics. He has three NBA All-Defensive First Team till date.
