The Miami Dolphins finished their rollercoaster ride in the 2024 NFL season with an 8–9 record, a second-place spot in the AFC East division, and missed out on a playoff spot by a significant margin. Although they had a mid-season surge, their losses against the Houston Texans (Week 15) and NY Jets (Week 18) hampered their progress toward a third successive playoff appearance. Amidst the turbulence of last season, the Dolphins saw a glimmer of hope with their offense, especially with their passing game. But Miami has a few concerns, which they would likely try to solve through the upcoming draft.

Top needs of Miami Dolphins ahead of 2025 NFL draft

Offensive line & Defensive line

According to Pro Football Focus, the Dolphins' immediate concern should be the offensive line. Miami allowed 43 sacks and ranked 18th in the NFL, as well as among the teams with the most holding penalties. Despite considerable performances from left tackle Terron Armstead and center Aaron Brewer, the interior offensive linemen have been an issue.

Guards Liam Eichenberg and Robert Jones struggled and scored a PFF grade of 53.1 and 56.1, respectively. Their difficulties in both pass protection and run blocking contributed to the team’s offensive challenges. Subsequently, Miami’s rushing attack suffered and dropped from 6.5 yards per carry in 2023 to 4.0 yards per carry in 2024 and they ranked 28th in the NFL.

Secondary

Terron Armstead has officially retired, leaving a huge gap on the offensive line for Miami to fill. Meanwhile, right tackle Austin Jackson showed flashes of brilliance, but has yet to prove himself. On the other hand, Miami’s defense also has its own set of problems, the biggest of which is the departure of star cornerback Jalen Ramsey. Although they have depth with players like Kader Kohou, the acquisition of a starting-calibre cornerback is a priority for the Dolphins.

Miami is also expected to bolster depth at linebacker and find a replacement for veteran safety Jordan Poyer, who is unlikely to return. They also need a second backup option for quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, who has struggled with injuries and has serious durability concerns.

What should Miami Dolphins do at the NFL draft?

The Dolphins tried their best to solve their pressing needs through free agency this offseason, but they have 10 picks (including compensatory picks) in the upcoming draft as well, which they can use strategically.

Round 1- Pick 28 DT Walter Nolen, Ole Miss

The signings of Zach Wilson and safeties Ashtyn Davis and Ifeatu Melifonwu have helped them address non-urgent issues immediately. Hence, Miami can target Ole Miss DT Walter Nolen as their pick for Round One. However, Georgia safety Malaki Starks is also an excellent alternative for Miami.

Round 2- Pick 48 Safety Xavier Watts, Notre Dame

For Round Two, Notre Dame safety Xavier Watts and West Virginia OT Wyatt Milum are solid options. DL Joshua Farmer of Florida State and DL Omarr Norman-Lott of Tennessee can be their third-round picks.

FAQs on Miami Dolphins Team Needs

A: Miami Dolphins' top three needs are: S, G, DL.

A: The Dolphins probably need to be on the hunt for two starting cornerbacks this year, with rumors the team is looking to trade Jalen Ramsey. Even if they were to keep Ramsey, someone to challenge Kader Kohou, Storm Duck, and Cam Smith for the top spot is an absolute need.

A: Since the Dolphins are hedging a lot of their roster quality on being right about the strength of the draft class at specific positions, it's a good time to look at whether the 2025 NFL draft aligns with Miami's needs — defensive tackle, cornerback, safety, and guard.
