The New England Patriots are in a rebuilding phase, after the sacking of Bill Bellichick and well beyond their dynasty era. They finished the previous season with a disappointing 4–13 record, placing them at the bottom of the AFC East division, which led to the firing of their head coach, Jerod Mayo.

Amidst their struggles, the Patriots have found a reliable quarterback in Drake Maye, who is a promising talent to carry on from Tom Brady. The acquisition of wide receiver Stefon Diggs provides a proven playmaker for the offense, while linebacker Harold Landry III and cornerback Carlton Davis III bolster the defense.

New England Patriots’ biggest needs in the 2025 NFL Draft

Offensive Line

The Patriots faced significant issues on their offensive line, struggling heavily in pass protection. They ranked 31st in pass block win rate and last in run block win rate. They also allowed 52 sacks, ranking fifth highest in the league. These issues have hampered the performance of rookie—but talented—quarterback Drake Maye. The Patriots scored only 289 points (30th), passed for 4,964 yards (31st), and secured 301 first downs (28th). Therefore, strengthening their O-line should be a top priority. According to NFL's mock draft, the New England Patriots are planning to draft offensive tackle Will Campbell from Louisiana State University instead of Heisman-finalist, Ashton Jeanty. The Boise State Broncos' running back would boost the ground-and-pound game of the Patriots but they need the best solution to protect Maye from getting sacked, which is why Campbell would be the ideal choice.

Defensive Line

The Patriots performed just as poorly with their defensive line as they did with their offensive line. They failed to generate pressure on opponents and allowed 417 points (22nd) from 5,829 yards (22nd). Defensive end Keion White was a highlight with 31 solo tackles, five sacks, and two forced fumbles.

The departure of veteran Davon Godchaux and the health concerns of Christian Barmore have impacted the unit. They have signed defensive tackle Milton Williams to a four-year, $104 million contract to enhance their pass rush, along with edge rusher Harold Landry and defensive tackle Khyiris Tonga to strengthen their front.

Wide Receivers

Hunter Henry, DeMario Douglas, and Kayshon Boutte each covered over 500 receiving yards, but no wideout recorded more than 674 yards. The Patriots’ top performer, Douglas was ranked 25th, which highlights the lack of a true first-option wide receiver. Therefore, they signed Stefon Diggs, who brings elite route-running and playmaking ability.

The Patriots have the highest remaining cap space among all teams, with $67.5 million in cap space and $58.08 million in effective cap space, along with $19.8 million in dead money. They also have nine draft picks, including the No. 4 overall pick. (via the New York Times)
