Born on February 6, 1996, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, United States, Looney joined the Golden State Warriors in 2015, and he has won three NBA championships with the Warriors.

Looney’s basketball journey began at Alexander Hamilton High School, Wisconsin, where he averaged 26.1 points, 12.4 rebounds, 7.0 blocks, and 3.1 assists per game, as a junior. In his final season, he averaged 27.9 points, 12.7 rebounds, 7.0 assists, and 8.0 blocks per game. He was named McDonald's All-American, becoming just the second player in Milwaukee Public Schools history, and the sixth ever in Wisconsin, to receive that honor. He was also named Wisconsin Mr. Basketball. In 2018, Hamilton High School retired Looney's No. 5.

After high school, Looney played college basketball for the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). In his college debut, he scored 20 points, 9 rebounds and 3 assists. He followed up with double-doubles in his next four games, becoming the first freshman in UCLA history with at least four double-doubles in his first five games. In his freshman season, he averaged 11.6 points, 9.2 rebounds, and 1.4 assists per game in 36 appearances, and he finished the season with 15 double-doubles. Looney was named to Second-team All-Pac-12 and Pac-12 All-Freshman team.

After one season with UCLA, Looney declared for the 2015 NBA Draft, where he was selected by the Golden State Warriors with the 30th overall pick. In the 2022/23 season for the Golden State Warriors, Looney played 82 games and averaged 7.0 points, 9.3 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game.
