The Proteas have dominated the ledger in head-to-head encounters against Sri Lanka in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.

The two perennial white-ball giants have locked horns four times over the course of the last eight editions of the global showpiece event, with South Africa coming out as victors on three occasions.

The first meeting between these two teams took place during the 2012 event, which was staged in Sri Lanka. The Proteas, who otherwise had an abysmal campaign, managed to pull off a 32-run win over eventual finalists, thanks to a magnificent 13-ball 30 in a rain-affected seven-over-a-aide affair.

The next encounter in 2014 was won by eventual world champions Sri Lanka. The victory was set-up by opener Kusal Perera (61 off 40) and Angelo Matthews (43 off 32) and was brought to fruition by a disciplined bowling performance-led by Sachithra Senanayake (2/22 in four overs).

This proved to be Sri Lanka’s solitary victory over the Proteas in T20 World Cups, as South Africa went on to win the next two encounters by eight and four wickets in 2016 and 2021 respectively.

The two sides are locked in Group D alongside Bangladesh, the Netherlands, and Nepal. They will face each other on June 03, 2024, at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York.
