As a five-star recruit, Smith played college basketball for the University of Maryland, where he was named on the Big-Ten All-Freshman in 2019 and All-Defensive team in 2020. He started all 64 games during his college career, leading them to the Big-Ten Regular season championship in 2020.
The Phoenix Suns selected Smith with the 10th overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft. He initially spent time in the G League, working on his game in his rookie season. He also played in six games for the Suns in their 2021 NBA Finals run. However, he was traded by the Suns to the Pacers in February, 2022.
