Jalen Smith is an American professional basketball player who plays as a backup center for the Indiana Pacers. Born on March 16, 2000, in Portsmouth, Virginia, Smith attended Joseph High School, where he was named on the Mcdonald's All-American team in 2018.
As a five-star recruit, Smith played college basketball for the University of Maryland, where he was named on the Big-Ten All-Freshman in 2019 and All-Defensive team in 2020. He started all 64 games during his college career, leading them to the Big-Ten Regular season championship in 2020.
The Phoenix Suns selected Smith with the 10th overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft. He initially spent time in the G League, working on his game in his rookie season. He also played in six games for the Suns in their 2021 NBA Finals run. However, he was traded by the Suns to the Pacers in February, 2022.
Since joining the Pacers, Smith has found his footing in the league, playing in 151 games in three seasons. He started as a power forward for the Pacers before shifting to a backup center role due to the Pacers preferring a small-ball lineup.
In the 2023/24 season, Smith has been the best three-point shooter on the Pacers roster, connecting on 42.4% of his attempts from deep. He has the second most offensive rebounds, only one behind Myles Turner and also has five double-doubles to his name. He averaged 9.9 points, 5.5 rebounds and 1.0 assists per game on 59.2% shooting during the regular season.
