Chauncey Billups Contract Details

Billups is on a five-year two million dollar contract as head coach of the Portland Trail Blazers with the final year of the deal being a team option. While negotiations were still active between Billups and the Trail Blazers management, he was serving as an assistant coach for the Los Angeles Clippers under head coach Tyronn Lue.

The team made the eventual announcement in late June of 2021, generating all sorts of reactions and responses from the players, members of the NBA media, and basketball fans. Billups replaced Terry Stotts who served as head coach for nine straight seasons with the team, leading them to the playoffs in eight of them.

Similar to Billups' 2022-23 season record, Stotts also coached the Blazers to 33 wins and 49 losses in his first season as head coach and later went on to lead the team to three 50 or more regular season finishes.

Many analysts and basketball channels across YouTube and social media commended the TrailBlazers for a unique head coach choice in Billups who during his years as a player, particularly in Detroit was known for being the perfect teammate and a voice of reason in the locker room.

Even during the twilight of his career when he was playing for the Clippers missing many of his games due to injury, the team looked up to him for his guidance and advice, especially towards the younger talent on the team.

Alongside improvement in the win column, there were notable positive changes in the team’s offensive and defensive gameplay this past season with more contributors getting the chance to shine on the floor. Let us hope that the Trail Blazers show improved performance starting next month and hopefully qualify for the playoffs.
