Born on December 2, 1997, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States, Hunter attended Friends' Central School in Wynnewood, where he averaged 21.6 points, 11.0 rebounds, and 5.0 assists per game as a junior, and was named the Pennsylvania Class AA Player of the Year. In his senior season, he averaged 23.5 points, 9.8 rebounds, and 3.0 assists per game.
Hunter then committed to playing college basketball for the University of Virginia, where he played for two seasons. In his sophomore season, Hunter averaged 15.2 points and 5.1 rebounds per game and led Virginia to the NCAA championship in 2019. He posted 27 points and nine rebounds in the championship game.
After two seasons in college, Hunter declared for the 2019 NBA Draft, where he was selected fourth overall by the Los Angeles Lakers, but was later traded to the Atlanta Hawks.
