Smith attended Sandy Creek High School, where he averaged 24 points, 10 rebounds, three steals, and three blocks per game in his senior year, and led his team to a Class 3A state runner-up finish. He was named McDonald's All-American, Mr. Georgia Basketball, and Georgia Gatorade Player of the Year.

Before the NBA, Smith played college basketball for Auburn University. In his freshman season, he averaged 16.9 points, 7.4 rebounds, and 2.0 assists per game in 34 appearances. After the end of the season, he won multiple awards, including USBWA Freshman of the Year, All-SEC first team, and a second-team All-American. On April 5, 2022, he declared for the 2022 NBA Draft.

Smith was selected by the Houston Rockets with the 3rd pick overall pick in the 2022 NBA Draft. In his first season in the NBA, he averaged 12.8 points, 7.2 rebounds, and 1.3 assists per game in 79 appearances.
