Jones attended Apple Valley High School, where he led his team to two Minnesota 4A state titles, in 2015 and 2017. He also received many awards, including Minnesota Gatorade Player of the Year twice, McDonald's All-American, and was named Minnesota Mr. Basketball after his senior season.

After high school, Jones played college basketball for the Duke Blue Devils for two seasons. In his sophomore season with Duke, he averaged 16.2 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 6.4 assists per game in 29 appearances. He was named ACC Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year. After two seasons in college, Jones declared for the 2020 NBA Draft.

Jones was selected by the San Antonio Spurs with the 41st overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft.

In the 2022/23 season for the San Antonio Spurs, Jones played 68 games and averaged 12.9 points, 3.6 rebounds and 6.6 assists per game.
