Jermain Colin Defoe: A Brief Biography

Jermain Defoe is an England footballer, born on October 7, 1982, who plays for Bournemouth in Premier League at centre-forward position.



Background


He was born in Canning Town, East London and was in the school football team. He became captain of his school team at the age of six, the first football team he played for was Charlton after representing his district. He attended a football camp at Bisham Abbey after which he was put in National FA school.Defoe has played for Youth clubs like Senrab FC and Charlton Athletic. He signed his first professional contract at the age of 16 for West Ham United.


Debut


He made his debut on March 31, 2004 for England and played for England U21 for the first time on May 24, 2001.


Rise to glory


Defoe was a significant player in World Cup finals 2010, where he scored a goal against Slovenia and helped England the last 16, he scored his first hat-trick in UEFA EURO 2012 against Bulgaria. By mid 2009, he had scored twice in four different games- against Andorra(2006), Trinidad & Tobago (2008), Andorra (2009), and Holland (2009).


He was a key player in Tottenham Hotspur winning the English League Cup in 2008. His team has won other accolades like, UEFA Cup, 2006, 2007 and 2008, World Cup 2010, EURO Cup 2012 and Europa League 2012 & 2013.


Low points


He suffered from malleolar injury in 2010 which made him miss 20 games for Tottenham Hotspur, and similar injury in 2017 made matters worse, when he had to miss 13 matches for AFC Bournemouth.

He has played in International Cup competitions like UEFA Cup 2006, 2007( Tottenham Hotspur) and in 2008 for Portsmouth FC, Champions League and Champions League Qualifications in 2010 for Tottenham Hotspur, Europa League 2011, 2012 & 2013 for Tottenham Hotspur.


He has played in national cup competitions like FA Cup 2002 for West Ham United, 2004- 2012 for Tottenham Hotspur, and from 2014-2016 for Sunderland AFC. He has also played in EFL Cup 2004, 2006, 2007-2013 for Tottenham Hotspur and from 2015-2016 for Sunderland AFC and in 2017 for AFC Bournemouth.


Elucidating on his participation in national leagues, he has been a part of Premier League 2000-2002 for West Ham United, in 2003-2007 and until 2016 for Tottenham Hotspur except from 2007-08 for Portsmouth FC, and in 2017 for AFC Bournemouth. He has also played in First Division League in 2003 for West Ham United and in MLS league 2014 for Toronto FC.


Records


Defoe was named Personality of The Year at the North East Football Writer's Association’s annual awards in 2017 which is given to those who use their position in football to benefit the wider community.


Retirement


Jermain Defoe retired in 2017 and planned to continue with managerial role in football after his retirement.
