Jasprit Bumrah

Jasprit Jasbirsingh Bumrah is an Indian cricketer who represents the country in international cricket. On the domestic level, Bumrah plays first-class cricket for Gujarat. He also plays for the Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League. Jasprit is one of India's ace bowlers and bowls right-arm fast. Jasprit is well popular for his fast-paced bowling style and in-swinging vicious yorkers.

Bumrah is also known for his peculiar bowling action. He is capable of consistently bowling at 140–145 kilometers per hour (87–90 mph). This not online makes him one of the fastest bowlers in India, but one of the fastest in the world.

Jasprit Bumrah Career

Jasprit Bumrah has always been in the news since the beginning of his career because of his unorthodox and slingy action. He is a death-over specialist known for his laser-guided missile Yorkers. He is the key face of Mumbai Indians in the IPL and Team India at the International level. Currently, Bumrah serves as the vice-captain of India’s Test team.

Jasprit Bumrah Domestic Career

Jasprit Bumrah made his T20 debut for Gujarat against Maharashtra in the 2012–13 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. He played a major role in the finals against Punjab by taking 3 wickets for just 14 runs and was the Man of the Match.

Following his success in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, Bumrah made his first-class cricket debut for Gujarat against Vidarbha in October 2013 during the 2013–14 season of the Ranji Trophy. He shined in his debut match, picking up 7 wickets in the match. By the time the tournament ended, Bumrah was the side's leading wicket-taker.

Jasprit Bumrah IPL Career

Bumrah made his IPL Debut at just 19 years of age. He played his first IPL game against RCB and emerged on top of the opponents finishing with a respectable figure of 3/32, with Virat Kohli being his maiden IPL wicket. He thus became only the second bowler in the history of the tournament to have bagged three wickets on his debut game. He was brought back by the Mumbai Franchise in 2014. Jasprit has been an integral part of the Mumbai Indians ever since.

Bumrah played a huge role in Mumbai Indians’ title-winning campaign. He has taken 145 wickets in his 120 IPL matches at a very cheap economy rate of 7.39, also being the second-highest wicket-taker for Mumbai Indians after Lasith Malinga and helped MI to win the IPL trophy five times in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2020.

In terms of wickets taken, Bumrah's best IPL season came in 2020, in which he took 27 wickets. He was the 2nd highest wicket-taker after Kagiso Rabada in the league that season. He also took his 100th IPL wicket in the form of Virat Kohli and became the 16th bowler in the league to do so.

After the 2020 IPL, Bumrah has gone from better to better. In the years 2021 and 2022, he played 28 IPL matches, in which he took 36 wickets at an economy rate of 7.29. He was the leading wicket-taker for Mumbai Indians in both years as well. Jasprit Bumrah could not play the entire 2023 IPL due to a back injury. He recently made his comeback for MI during the 2024 IPL season and is currently playing for them.

Jasprit Bumrah International Career

After his brilliant performance in the domestic circuit and IPL, Jasprit Bumrah got the chance to show his skills at the International level. He made his ODI debut against Australia in Sydney and T20I debut against the same Australia in Adelaide. Due to his consistent and excellent performance in white-ball cricket, the Indian selectors gave him a chance in red-ball cricket as well. He made his Test debut against South Africa in Cape Town.

Jasprit Bumrah T20I Career

Bumrah made his debut for the Indian cricket team in a T20I on 27 January 2016 against Australia. He was up to the mark in that series finishing as the leading wicket-taker with six wickets in the bag. His unorthodox and slingy action made every batter uncomfortable against him at the time of his T20I debut. He was also part of India’s squad for the 2016 ICC T20I World Cup that was held in India. He was the highest wicket-taker in T20I in 2016, finishing the calendar year with 28 wickets.

During England’s 2016-17 tour of India, Bumrah was the 2nd highest wicket-taker of that T20I series with 5 wickets. He also got his name in the ICC Men’s T20I Team of the Decade (2011-2020) in December 2020. He was part of the Indian team that failed to qualify for the semi-finals in the 2021 ICC T20I World Cup. He missed the entire 2022 Asia Cup and 2022 T20I World Cup due to a back injury.

In August 2023, Bumrah made his comeback to international cricket in the T20I series against Ireland. Being selected as India’s captain in that series, he led the team right from the front and also won the Player of the Series award. Overall, he has played 62 T20I matches for Team India in which he took 74 wickets (as of April 2024).

Jasprit Bumrah Test Career

Bumrah made his Test Debut in January 2018, against South Africa. Bumrah couldn't have asked for a better maiden wicket than that AB de Villiers, as he clean bowled the South African legend. He took his maiden five-wicket haul in Tests in the same series, during the 3rd Test Match of India Tour of South Africa 2017-18, at Johannesburg (5/54). He missed the first two Test matches of the 2018 Pataudi Trophy against England due to a thumb injury. He made his comeback through the 3rd Test match at Trent Bridge and took his second five-wicket haul (5/85) against England.

Bumrah played a vital role during the India Tour of Australia 2018. He took another five-wicket haul (6/33) on the Boxing Day Test. He became the first Asian bowler to take five-wicket hauls in Australia, England, and South Africa in the same calendar year. He became a part of the first-ever Indian team to win a test series against team Australia on Australian soil. He was the joint-highest wicket-taker (21 wickets) along with Nathon Lyon in that series. He created a record for the most wickets (48) by an Indian bowler in his debut year in Test cricket at the end of 2018. For his outstanding performance in Test cricket in 2018, he got his name in the ‘ICC Men’s Test Team of the Year - 2018. Although, experts of the game never really considered Bumrah to be a test cricketer, his test wickets speak otherwise.

Jasprit Bumrah’s Test career was at its peak during the India tour of West Indies 2019. He was doing wonders with the ball where he took 5 wickets by giving only 7 runs in the 2nd innings of the 1st Test match. It was his 4th five-wicket haul in Test cricket. In the next Test match, he became the 3rd Indian to take a hat-trick in a Test match. He was the leading wicket-taker (13) in that series. Bumrah was part of the Indian team that won the 2020 Border-Gavaskar Trophy and defeated Australia for the second time on Australian soil. However, he was ruled out of the iconic Gabba Test match due to an abdominal strain.

After proving his bowling prowess all over the world, Bumrah played his first Test match in India against England at Chennai in February 2021. Daniel Lawrence was his first Test wicket in India. He also featured in the 2021 ICC World Test Championship Final against New Zealand but couldn’t make any impact and remained wicketless for the entire match.

Recovering from his failure in the WTC final, Bumrah made a strong comeback from the 2021 India tour of England. He was the leading wicket-taker (23 wickets) in that series and was also the Player of the Series along with England's Joe Root. In the last Test match of the series, Bumrah was also the captain of the Indian Test team for the first time as Rohit Sharma missed it due to COVID-19. He scored 35 runs in an over bowled by Stuart Broad, making it a world record (Highest runs scored in an over in the history of Test cricket).

In February 2024, Bumrah became the fastest Indian fast bowler to take 150 wickets in Test cricket during England’s tour of India. He also became the first Indian pacer to achieve No.1 ranking in the ICC Test player rankings. In addition, he also got the No.1 ranking in all three formats of the game.

Jasprit Bumrah ODI Career

Jasprit Bumrah made his ODI Debut on 23 January 2016 vs Australia. In 2017, He bagged the record for the most wickets (15) taken by any fast bowler in a bilateral ODI series of five or fewer matches, against Sri Lanka. Bumrah however committed the blunder of his career by bowling a no-ball in the final of the Champions Trophy 2017 that would have resulted in a wicket.

Bumrah was named in India's squad for the Cricket World Cup 2019. The International Cricket Council (ICC) named him as one of the five exciting talents making their Cricket World Cup debut. Bumrah completed his 100th wicket in ODIs and became the second-fastest Indian to do so after Mohammed Shami during India's match against Sri Lanka. He was the highest wicket-taker for India in the 2019 World Cup. He was fifth highest overall, with eighteen wickets from nine matches.

Bumrah was also named in India's squad for the Cricket World Cup 2023. He played his second ODI World Cup this time. He was brilliant from the start by dismissing Mitchell Marsh as his first wicket of the 2023 World Cup. He was the second-highest wicket-taker for India after Mohammed Shami in the 2023 ODI World Cup. He was fourth highest overall, with 20 wickets from 11 matches.

Overall, he has played 89 ODI matches for India in which he took 149 wickets (as of May 2024).

Jasprit Bumrah's Captaincy

As of 2024, Jasprit Bumrah is the permanent vice-captain of India’s Test side. In July 2022, he captained India’s Test side for the first time in the Edgbaston Test match against England, where India lost the match. In August 2023, He captained India’s T20I side against Ireland for the first time and was also the Player of the Series, which India won 2-0.

Jasprit Bumrah was born on 6 December 1993 in Ahmedabad, Gujarat to Daljit Bumrah and Jasbir Singh Bumrah. He lost his father when he was just five years old. His mother, Daljit Bumrah was a school principal and she raised her children alone. Bumrah has a sister named Juhika.

On 15 March 2021, Bumrah got married to Television personality and Sports presenter ‘Sanjana Ganesan’. The couple welcomed their first child, a baby boy ‘Angad Bumrah’ in September 2023.
