Anderson’ basketball journey began in St. Anthony High School, New Jersey, where he led his team to two consecutive state titles, and was named state player of the year during his senior season.

In 2011, Anderson committed to play for the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). As a freshman, he averaged 9.7 points, 8.6 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game. He led the team in rebounding and was the only player ranked in the top 10 in the Pac-12 (Pacific-12 Conference) in both assists and rebounds. He was also named on the All-Pac-12 second team and the Pac-12 All-Freshman team.

Anderson played two seasons of college basketball for the University of California, and averaged 12.2 points, 8.7 rebounds, and 5.0 assists in 71 games.

In the 2022/23 season for the Timberwolves, Anderson played 69 games and averaged 9.4 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 4.9 assists per game.
