History of Howling Wolf Village

Due to a lack of information, not much is known about the founding or history of the village. Howling Wolf Village made its debut in the Naruto world with the release of the novel, Naruto Jinraiden: The Day the Wolf Howled. Based on the limited information that is available, the Howling Wolf Village was originally a hidden village in the Land of Medicines and was basically the residence of the Kodon clan. It is stated that in ancient times, the village was attacked by a monster that resembled the appearance of a wolf known as Roen. The monster would constantly attack the village time after time, disturbing the peace and harmony in the village. Eventually, the Kodon clan found a way to successfully seal Roen, establishing peace and harmony in the village once again.

After the village was saved from Roen, people from different lands and non-Kodon communities settled in the village. Soon, the Howling Wolf Village started trading medicines and provided the shinobi world with decent shinobi, establishing itself as a hidden shinobi village. The Kumanoi clan of the Howling Wolf Village invented blue fire powder at some point. The village now had a brand-new, highly effective tool at its disposal that didn't require skill or training. The village used the blue fire powder to repel an invasion attempt by Amegakure, also known as the Village Hidden in the Rain, which demonstrated the potency and reliability of the blue fire powder.

The village soon gained wealth and prosperity as a result of this new invention as sales skyrocketed. Many wished to end the village's shinobi services because of this. Tenma Kodon, the leader of the Kodon clan at the time, disagreed. He thought and believed that shinobi were required to comprehend the horrors of war, and blue fire powder only seemed to facilitate this. To try to sway the others in his favor and against neutrality, Tenma used Roen to attack the village. Initially, Tenma planned to control and subdue Roen’s wrath by using his Kotaro, a saigenzai (a medicinal drug that induces genjutsu) that he created to keep Roen in check. Unexpectedly, the blue fire powder's power was sufficient to override the effects of Kotaro. Later, Roen unleashed his full fury on the villagers. Prior to their deaths, Tenma and his wife sought to seal Roen in its original prison, but they were only able to seal it in their young son, Kina. Due to Kotaro's effects, the surviving villagers' memories of what happened during Roen's attack were clouded, although many believed Tenma was to blame.

Soon, the Howling Wolf Village renounced all shinobi-related services, declared itself neutral in all conflicts, and outlawed most weapons in the village. Some of the village's former shinobi were able to secure new positions as police and guards, but others left the village in an attempt to find work elsewhere. Those who remained turned to the hallucinogen saigenzai to get through their daily lives. However, the rest of the village relished the tranquility. Eighty-eight torii, which stand for the isolation of the village from the rest of the world, are placed along the road leading to the village.

Clans of the Howling Wolf Village

The Kodon Clan

The Kodon Clan is a clan of the Howling Wolf Village. They have the ability to produce Kotaro, a type of medicinal saigenzai that only the Kodon clan can produce within their bodies. Nevertheless, this is not classified as a kekkei genkai. The Kodon clan previously sealed Roen into their clan's shrine to protect the village. Decades later, Tenma Kodon released Roen to try and persuade the village against declaring neutrality as they were considering doing so. Tenma and his wife died as a result of the effort, after sealing Roen in their infant son Kina. Although the villagers had no proof as their memory of the incident was clouded due to the effects of Kotaro, they had a feeling that Tenma was the one to blame. The clan soon faced disfavor, leading Kina to seek a way to restore his clan’s honor.

The Kumanoi Clan

The Kumanoi Clan was a clan of the Howling Wolf Village. At some point, they accidentally created blue fire powder while attempting to create a medicine capable of granting eternal youth. After Tenma used Roen to attack and persuade the village against declaring neutrality, the Kumanoi Clan used the blue fire powder to defend the village. After it was over and the village was safe from Roen once again, the Kumanoi left and cut their ties with the Howling Wolf Clan.
