South Dakota State University wide receiver Jaxon Janke was born in Madison, South Dakota. He had a decorated high school career as he grew up attending Madison High School. Janke was an important asset to the team which won three consecutive Class 11A football titles (2015-17). Janke was named Class 11A Player of the Year, catching 58 passes for 1,310 yards and 24 touchdowns as a wide receiver, while adding four interceptions and 69 tackles at safety.
While struggling for game time in his freshman season (2018), Janke became an important aspect of the team in 2019 as he played as a punt returner as well. He also became the first Jackrabbit punt returner in the Division I era to top 100 punt return yards in a game that season. Janke had a breakout season in 2020 as he led the team in all receiving categories including receptions (32), yards (473) and touchdowns (6) as he was named to the second-team all-Missouri Valley Football Conference that year.
Janke led the team with 72 receptions and 1,165 receiving yards for the second season in a row in 2021. Moreover, his 72 receptions tied for sixth-most in a single season by a Jackrabbit and his 1,165 receiving yards were eighth highest. Janke entered the 2023 season ranking fourth in program history for career receptions (193), tied for fifth in receiving touchdowns (24) and sixth in receiving yards (2,848).
Coming into the draft Janke has quite a few nominations like All-Missouri Valley Football Conference Second Team (2020-21, 2021, 2022), HERO Sports FCS Sophomore All-America Team (2020-21), MVFC All-Academic Honourable Mention (2020-21, 2021) and a few more to his name.
