Cade Cunningham was born on September 25, 2001, in Arlington, Texas, U.S. to Carrie and Keith Cunningham. He attended Bowie High School in his hometown where he initially played football as a quarterback. He later switched to basketball after watching his brother play in college. Cunningham switched high school from Bowie to Montverde Academy in Florida, where he was named a consensus five-star recruit. He also received the national Player of the Year recognition for leading one of the best high school teams in history.
Cunningham would go on to play college basketball for Oklahoma State. A hugely successful freshman season earned him a consensus first-team All-American and Big 12 Player of the Year Awards.
