Trey Murphy III is an American professional basketball player who plays as a backup forward for the New Orleans Pelicans. Born on June 18, 2000, in Durham, North Carolina, Murphy was drafted by the Memphis Grizzlies with the 17th overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft.


Prior to his NBA career, Murphy played college basketball at both Rice University and the University of Virginia. He shot 40.1% from the 3-point line in college. In his only season with Virginia, he led them to the ACC regular season title, averaging 11.3 points and 3.4 rebounds, having shooting splits of 50.3/43.3/92.7.


In the 2023/24 season, Murphy has featured in 57 games, making 23 starts. He was used as a high volume 3-point shooter by the Pelicans, averaging 7.8 3-point attempts per game. He is ranked 20th in NBA for most 3-point attempts and 21st for 3-pointers made per game (3.0).
