Elijah Mitchell Contract

Last Modified Feb 9, 2024 07:32 GMT

Elijah Mitchell is a professional American football player who plays as a running back for The San Francisco 49ers. Beginning his career at Erath High School in his hometown, Mitchell would showcase tremendous potential as a running back despite missing major time due to injury. But, he was only able to make it to his home state University of Lousiana, thanks in part to the injury concerns.

His freshman season would follow a similar story. However, it was from Year 2 onwards that Mitchell started coming into his own. Tallying close to 1,000 rushing yards while adding over 300 yards as a receiver, he would vault into the Second-Team All-Sun Belt. His second season would see him show further improvement as a rusher, as he would finish with over 1,100 rushing yards, earning a second consecutive Second-Team All-Sun Belt selection. In his final season, while his overall numbers saw some regression, his per-game stats were off the charts, resulting in a First-Team All-Sun Belt selection.

Without a ton of hype surrounding him coming out of college, Mitchell wasn't a highly touted draft prospect. As a result, he fell to the San Francisco 49ers in the sixth round being selected 194th overall in the 2021 NFL draft. Immediately, it was clear that that spot was a drastic steal for the 49ers. Starting in 10 out of 11 games, he would break the San Francisco Rookie record for rushing yards with 963 in total. He would continue his form into the playoffs as well, where he tallied over 150 yards in just three games.

However, the arrival of Christian McCaffrey, following an MCL sprain to begin Year 2, has pushed Mitchell down the pecking order in San Francisco. As a result, despite a phenomenal rookie season, he hasn't achieved the same heights in the next couple of years, barely getting any playing time.
