Payton Wilson has emerged as a standout player while representing North Carolina State University in college football for the NC State Wolfpack, playing in the linebacker position. After concluding his five-year career at NC State, he announced his entry into the 2024 NFL Draft. Wilson’s football journey began during his formative years when he joined the school's football team at Orange High School. During his junior year, he excelled beyond the football field and not only participated in wrestling but also secured the state 220-pound 3A wrestling championship.

As a junior, he concluded the season with 127 tackles, 39 tackles for loss and 13 sacks. However, Wilson’s journey was not a smooth sail, as his senior season came to an end due to a torn ACL, limiting his time on the field. As a four-star recruit, he was a highly recruited prospect, receiving offers from several institutions. He ultimately committed to playing college football at NC State over his original commitment to the University of North Carolina.

Throughout his tenure at NC State, he showcased exceptional performance on the field, earning several awards and accolades for his noteworthy contributions to the team’s success. Notably, in the 2023 season, Wilson shone brightly, capturing everyone’s attention and clinching both the 2023 Butkus Award and the 2023 Chuck Bednarik Award. Additionally, he secured a well-deserved place on the 2023 first-team All-ACC and was named the 2023 ACC Defensive Player of the Year.
