North Carolina-born football nose tackle David Vernon “D.J.” Reader Jr. was drafted in the fifth round of the 2016 NFL Draft. He became a starter for the Houston Texans following his rookie year making 14 appearances. After spending four years with the Texans, Reader had 52 starts, combining for 154 tackles. Cincinnati Bengals signed Reader on a four-year deal in April 2020. He made a Superbowl appearance in the 2021 season of Super Bowl LVI. Reader signed with the Detroit Lions on March 14, 2024, at the end of his contract.

Growing up in Carolina, Reader attended Grimsley Senior High School. He was rated as the no. 19 offensive guard nationally by Rivals. Reader chose to attend Clemson University playing for the Tigers from 2012-2015. Reader finished his college career with 145 tackles in 46 games being only the second Tiger to letter on top-25 football and baseball teams the same year.
