Laiatu Latu is an American football player who plays as a defensive end. He is widely considered to be one of the if not the best edge rushers in the upcoming 2024 NFL Draft that is set to take place in Detroit, Michigan at the end of April. Latu is seen by many experts to be a mid-first-round pick and any teams that need an expert defender to get after the signal caller should be glad if he falls to them. Born on December 31, 2000, in Sacramento, California, Latu attended Jesuit High School in his native city of Sacramento. In high school, Latu played as an outside linebacker on the defense while also playing the tight end position on offense. He then went to the University of Washington where he played on the Washington Huskies football team from 2019 to 2021 after which he transferred to the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) in 2022.

Latu’s main strength as a good pass rusher is the variability of hand moves that he brings to his game. He has shown an ability to win with cross-chops, swim moves, swipes, clubs, and more. He is a technically sound defender who gave the offensive line more than a run for their money especially in his dominant 2023 season. He is also very fluid while he transitions between his moves and has the ability to react and modify depending on what the offense is giving him. One of the main areas of concern with Latu is his medical and injury history that forced him to sit out two years of his college football career.

Who is Laiatu Latu’s brother?

Laiatu Latu is the older brother of Keleki Latu who is currently a student-athlete at the University of Nevada. Following in his older brother’s footsteps, Keleki took up the sport of gridiron football and played as a tight end as well as a defensive end in high school.

The younger Latu then attended the University of California, Berkeley where he played on the Golden Bears football team for two years in 2021 and 2022. To receive more playing time and to improve his position as a tight end, Keleki Latu transferred to the University of Nevada in 2023 for his junior year. Despite starting well with 14 catches for 179 yards from the first six games, his 2023 season was cut short due to a season-ending injury.

Keleki Latu credits his older brother, Laiatu Latu, for having a profound impact on his football career. Growing up, the two brothers shared a strong bond rooted in their love for football, faith, and family. Laiatu is now an NFL player and who has been a source of inspiration for Keleki throughout his journey.

Laiatu faced a tough setback when he suffered a neck injury that almost ended his football career. But instead of giving up, he came back strong, playing for UCLA and eventually making it to the NFL. Keleki says watching his brother go through that challenge inspired him to keep pushing forward in his own football career.

“Seeing him come back from such a hard time really motivated me,” Keleki shared. “He showed me that you can overcome anything if you stay focused and believe in yourself" as per Nevada Sportsnet.
