Highlights of WWE SmackDown May 31, 2024

The Tongan Bloodline defeat The Street Profits

The Bloodline has witnessed a major shift in the past few months. While Jimmy Uso was kicked out of the group, brothers Tama Tonga and Tonga Loa made their debuts. The two stars teamed up on the May 31, 2024, episode of SmackDown and defeated the former WWE Tag Team Champions Street Profits in a tag team match that lasted about quarter an hour.

Andrade defeated Apollo Crews

The athletic Andrade and Apollo Crews took on each other in the opening match of SmackDown. The match lasted seven minutes and it was not very difficult for the former AEW Superstar to get the better off Crews.

Piper Niven and Chelsea Green win the tag team match

In the main event of the SmackDown, former WWE Tag Team Champions Piper Niven and Chelsea Green took on Naomi and the current WWE Women's Champion Bayley. In a match that felt to be weighed in favor of Bayley and Naomi, it were Green and Niven who took home the victory after Niven pinned Naomi for the victory.

AJ Styles tricks Cody Rhodes

AJ Styles came out on SmackDown to announce his in-ring retirement. The audience could not hold their tears back watching The Phenomenal One hang up his boots. His current rival and the current Undisputed WWE Champion Cody Rhodes came out on the ring to bury the hatchet only for Styles to attack him and reveal that he is not going anywhere.

WWE SmackDown History

During the peak of Monday Night Wars between WWE and WCW, the latter had also set up a secondary weekly programming named WCW Thunder which aired on Thursday Nights. This allowed the rival company to let out more content than WWE. In response, McMahon's company decided to create its secondary weekly programming. On April 29, 1999, WWF SmackDown made its first appearance and officially debuted on UPN on the 26th of August that year. The name for the show was derived from "Layeth the SmackDown", which was a popluar catchphrase of Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson. SmackDown was initially meant to be a only female wrestling brand, but due to the lack of interest in the division at the time, it was simply promoted as WWE's Secondary programming.

After WWE acquired WCW in 2001, its roster size had gotten too big because it had also acquired the majority of WCW's talent. As a result, it decided to split its roster into two halves between RAW and SmackDown. It organized the first-ever draft in 2002. The show was switched to Friday Nights in 2005. SmackDown is most prominently known as Friday Night SmackDown and has aired on Friday Nights for most of the time.

Between 2005 and 2011, SmackDown switched between multiple TV deals and the brand extension was dropped that year. A few months later, SmackDown became the 2nd longest-running weekly episodic television programming only behind Monday Night RAW. The show returned to Thursday Nights in January 2015. WWE announced the return of brand split in 2016 and the show was subsequently brought to Tuesday Nights and was renamed SmackDown Live! It remained on the Tuesday Nights up until 2019. In 2019, the show was moved to Fox and shifted back to Friday Nights, where it currently airs.

WWE's former Chairman Vince McMahon sold the company to Endeavour Group in 2023. The Endeavour Group also owns UFC. Following the sale, SmackDown started premiering for the first time without McMahon family having majority ownership in the company. On September 21, 2023, it was announced that from October 2024, SmackDown will start airing on USA Network. The agreement between WWE and NBC Universal is valued at around $1.4 Billion.
