The Saints drafted Penning as their 19th pick in the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft. In his rookie season, Penning was placed on injured reserve due to a torn ligament in September 2022. Since being drafted, he has experienced his fair share of injury issues, which has reduced his playing time in the league. Penning started his collegiate career with the University of Northern Iowa in 2017.
