Lachlan Hammon Ferguson, popularly known as Lockie Ferguson, is a New Zealand cricket player who was born on June 13, 1991, in the city of Auckland. Lockie is a right-handed fast bowler and a right-handed batsman, but his primary role in his team is that of a fast bowler.


Ferguson is renowned for clocking bullets with his raw pace, disciplined lines, and lengths. His ability to clock 150+ kmphs frequently has earned him a reputation in the white-ball formats.

Lockie Ferguson Domestic Career

Lockie Ferguson started his career in first-class cricket in the domestic season of 2012-13, playing for Auckland in the Plunket Shield Tournament. It took him two years to make an impact in the tournament. After very ordinary performances in the 2012-13 and 2013-14 domestic seasons, he finally made an impact by taking a total of 21 wickets in the 2014-15 season. He repeated the performance in the next season as well by taking a total of 31 wickets, which earned him a place in the national squad.

Lockie Ferguson IPL Career

Lockie Ferguson is an active player of the Indian Premier League. In 2017, he was a member of Rising Pune Supergiant having been bought for INR 50 lakhs. He even won the ‘Player of the Match’ award against Royal Challengers Bangalore (now Royal Challengers Bengaluru) for taking two wickets for only seven runs. Ferguson was later drafted into the Kolkata Knight Riders setup in 2019 for INR 1.60 crores. He just played five to six games apiece in 2019 and 2020 and did not have many wickets in the wickets column.


Ferguson had his best season in IPL 2021, where he picked up 13 wickets in just 8 matches at an economy of 7.46 and was instrumental in KKR staging a comeback in that season from the bottom half of the table and finishing as runners-up. He was released by the Knight Riders ahead of the IPL 2022 mega auction and was snatched by the newly-inducted Gujarat Titans for INR 10 crores. He had a season similar to the previous one as he took 12 wickets in 13 matches. Before the commencement of IPL 2023, Ferguson was traded back to his former team KKR by the Titans for Afghanistan wicketkeeper-batter Rahmanullah Gurbaz. However, he sustained an injury after playing just 3 games. The New Zealand speedster went unsold in the first round of the IPL 2023 auction but was picked up by Royal Challengers Bangalore (now Royal Challengers Bengaluru) in the accelerated auction for his base price of INR 2 crores.

Lockie Ferguson made his international debut for New Zealand against Australia in an ODI on December 04, 2016. He has been instrumental in setting up the Black Caps’ pace battery, but is also injury-prone which has made him sit out of a few important games.


Lockie Ferguson ODI Career

Lockie Ferguson made his ODI debut in December 2016 against Australia, where he was called in to replace an injured Adam Milne. He used his opportunity well and dismissed David Warner in his first over. But the subsequent overs of his spell were poor and he had conceded 73 runs by the end of the innings. New Zealand lost the match by 68 runs, and he was dropped from the team. Lockie Ferguson was recalled for the third match between Australia and New Zealand in December but failed to utilize the opportunity and could not take any wickets.


He took his maiden ODI five-wicket haul against Pakistan in November 2018, which included a dramatic hit-wicket of Mohammad Hafeez. The match was abandoned due to rain and Ferguson was adjudged the ‘Player of the Match’ for his maiden five-wicket haul.


In April 2019, he was named in New Zealand's squad for the 2019 Cricket World Cup. On 5 June 2019, in a match against Bangladesh, Ferguson took his 50th wicket in ODIs. Lockie Ferguson played 9 games in the tournament including the final and took 21 wickets, finishing on the second spot behind Mitchell Starc who topped the list with 27 wickets.


Ferguson was drafted into the ICC Cricket World Cup held in India in 2023 and picked up 10 wickets in 7 innings, with a best of 3/19 versus Afghanistan.

Lockie Ferguson Test Career

Lockie Ferguson made his Test debut against Australia on December 12, 2019. He could not complete the match as he suffered a calf strain. That was his only Test match and he has not yet featured in a Test for New Zealand since then.


Lockie Ferguson T20I Career

Lockie Ferguson was given a chance to play his T20I against Bangladesh in January 2017, where he took two wickets on his first two deliveries. He took three wickets in the match and was praised for his performance.


Ferguson picked his maiden five-wicket haul in T20Is against the West Indies in November 2020, becoming the second New Zealand bowler to pick a five-wicket haul in T20Is after Tim Southee and was selected for the ICC T20 World Cup 2021. However, a calf tear ruled him out of the mega event which left him distraught. He played in the ICC T20 World Cup 2022 held in Australia and has been named in the provisional squad to represent New Zealand at the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 in the West Indies and the United States of America.
