Debutant Neil Broom has been called into New Zealand's squad for the second Test against South Africa.

Broom, 33, could make his Test bow after replacing Ross Taylor for the Wellington clash, starting on Thursday.

Batsman Taylor was ruled out of the second Test due to a calf injury on Sunday.

Broom was played 30 one-day internationals and 11 Twenty20s for New Zealand, posting one hundred and three half-centuries.

"With 18 First-Class centuries Neil has shown ability in red ball cricket over a long period of time," Black Caps selector Gavin Larsen said.

"While he hasn't played a Test, Neil still brings a considerable amount of experience and maturity to the side in Ross's absence.

"Neil's been a big part of our group over the course of the summer and this is another exciting opportunity for him."

The opening Test was declared a draw after the final day was washed out due to rain in Dunedin.
